I had a 'clacking' sprint engine, turned out to be piston slap.
Made the noise when turning engine over on the starter, noise went away when turning over with plug removed on the offending cylinder.
The piston showed signs of a four corner seizure and its skirt had been crushed. 12 thou feeler gauge would fit down the side
Was the engine running hot when it happened?

Looking at all the piston end bits I bought, I'm guessing the small end bushes would only get knackered if there wasn't enough oil getting to them.

Hi Adam, ...

did you solve your problem with the noisey engine? If so, then how? I'm interested in, because my engine also makes clattering noise. I took a small video, where you can hear (and of course see) it, and I hope that's not a piston slap. [-o< [-o< http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=SbKohhEBkmE

cheers,
