I recently asked the question about removing the brass cage. Using Marts advice (I hasten to add his drawing looks 10 times better than the improvistion I used) I got the cage out.
I then refurbed the pump, put it back in and the engine is now purring like a kitten

The pump is in good nick. I think i'll only need to put new o rings on the brass cage. Mine was a complete b@st@rd to get out. I have to admit though, it was the old man who got it out while i was at work.

My pump is pretty fooked, the shaft is badly pitted with rust. Hoping to get the engine back in over the xmas period.

Water pump removal
Just picking up on this thread I noted Jonners' reply about fitting the left handed bolt to his slide hammer. Some years ago (well, quite a few really!) when I first had to drift my pump out I found someone to braze a spare L/H bolt to the end of (an equally spare!) clutch cross operating shaft (part 158168) and used the throwout fork (part 140937) as the drift. It worked great with no damage or stretch to the bolt or inner thread. Since then, a careful twist anti-clockwise of the L/H bolt on the impellor has always worked.
