Where would this ladder sit?

How soon would you make one?

Do you fancy making two?

How much would one be?

It sits on the main bearing caps thus supporting them and the mains making the bottom end very strong.
This was a works mod I believe.

I can make more than one so watch this thread for details 8)

Well, if you want a bit if of extra cash before Christmas, my engine is going back together as we speak.. nudg nudge

So it sits between the head of the main and big end bearing cap bolts and the cap itself...?

Do they not normally try and bolt them to the block walls aswell between the sump and block faces.

I dont think so Neil it just braces the caps hence creates a stronger crank case I also think one of the French cars has one as standard, maybe a Renault 5 turbo.

I have checked tonight and I think it would be wise to use longer 7/16 UNF (in cast iron :wary: ) bolts I will check what is required and post the sizes on here but as there are a few of us who want to do this I will check the tensile strength req (probably 12.9) so be a little patient as I too want to be building the lump during Xmas break.

I could be interested too, I had to take my new engine apart, so far very little is going back as it was.

If you going to fit a girdle plate (ladder??) you need to make spacers to go between the top of the main bearing cap and the plate. We have had studs made to fit into the block that are long enough to pass through the bearing cap and through the plate.

The cap is bolted down using nuts on the studs, spacers are machined to fill the gap between the top of nut and plate and then nut is used to secure the plate to the bearing cap stud. We also dowel and screw the plate to the block (sump edge) face. We don't rely on the sump bolts to secure the plate, as you can't tighten them enough as you damage (crush) the sump gasket. Gasket is only used between sump and plate, plate can be sealed to block edge using Loctite Master gasket, Hylomar or silicon.

To prepare a plate and set a block up for the first time is a VERY time consuming job.
