I'm getting closer to carrying out trials on a Sprint engine with a pair of carbs that I have just thoroughly rebuilt.
I think that Zenith Stromberg carbs are better than SU in many areas. For instance, they can cope with high under hood temperatures far better because of their temperature compensators. The choke system is much less fussy than on the SU carb. And the idle quality, in my experience, is much better than SU. Also Z-S carbs are not prone to throttle shaft wear.
I've used Jensen-Healey needles, since that engine is also a 2.0-liter 16-valve unit. That needle profile should be close to what I need.
I modified federal TR7 throttle linkage by using a longer throttle shaft on the front carb and by making a longer balance bar, an easy job.
As soon as my TR7 Sprint comes out of winter storage 8 weeks from today, I plan to install the carbs and see how they work.
That said, I have also built a fresh pair of 2-inch SUs using Rover 2000 bodies with HD8 pistons and dampers and UM needles. I plan to use those on my fresh engine with the SRT91 camshaft.
It'll be a fun spring, blazing many paths many of you have probably already gone down in previous years.

totally disagree...
the strombergs are bin fodder...
The underslung float chamber is a real achilies heel and the diaphrams are rubbish.
Good luck with them...
I'd go for HD8's anytime...

Note from Admin: sadly Jon passed away in February 2018 but his humour and wealth of knowledge will be fondly remembered by all. RIP Jonners.
Strombergs tend to do better on our slant engines because they are away from the heat.
Having owned numerous TR6s, the infernal Strombergs were always acting up. But on the TR7s I've owned, they've gone the distance with very few problems.
But I do have a set of properly built HS8s...that is with HD8 pistons and dampers and three sets of needles, UM, UE and UV. I will find the proper combination and have a great engine, after a lot of tinkering.
