I don't want to appear antagonistic, but of course a DVLA record will APPEAR legit! DVLA only knows what it is told! I have in my possession , a V5c for a 1963 Triumph Herald 12/50 Estate with 2498cc engine (engine number begins CP....) I never actually owned this car, I bought the log book, commision and body plates and number plates from a scrappy many years ago (long before historic, or even 25 year exempt tax) to give an identity to another nasty hybrid I was planning, that would allow me to drive legally without seatbelts! In the end the car never got built cos I did my GT6 convertible instead, but I've still got the Herald ID and bits! DVLA in those days was even more literal than it is now and accepted all the obvious changes (and a colour change) without question!
I'm quite sure I'm not alone in my opinion that what DVLA doesn't know won't hurt them (or me!) I am also sure that, like me, this guy has no intent to decieve but unlike me his car is sufficiently close to the original to be passed off as the genuine article, at least to someone who is not very familiar with the breed (possibly including him!)
