Help fixing steering column movement
Re: Help fixing steering column movement
Do you actually bend it open? is it possible to re-use it after its been opened?

Re: Help fixing steering column movement
Yes you can force it open. It only needs a very small amount and its still re-usable.
You can repair your flexible coupling with poly bushes. I think Chris Witor sells them. Its a bit fiddly so you may want a new one
but they are sadly of variable quality.
Fitchetts or Winns have good ones.
You should try and pull the lower part of the column out of the intermediate shaft coupling from inside the car.
I have used a fork type ball joint separator under the large washer at the end of the column just on top of the bush you are replacing.
Or you can try the same thing from the engine side and force the tool between the intermediate shaft and the bulkhead.
You are having a bad time...
There is also a 3rd pinch bolt on the intermediate shaft that allows some adjustment in length. Try undoing this one as well.
Sounds like you need to take off the whole shaft and give it a good clean up with a wire brush, derust and lubricate the sliding bits.
It will go back on much more easilly.

Re: Help fixing steering column movement
Thanks a lot guys, I was thinking of replacing the flexible coupling with this part http://www.chriswitor.com/proddetail.php?prod=145377RM as many on the forum seem to think its better than the original, what do you think?

Re: Help fixing steering column movement
Hi everyone!
After a long struggle I finally managed to remove the intermediate shaft, the UJ is indeed seized so it is lying in white vinegar...
I'd like to know which parts I need to order as all I removed above the UJ is a washer, an old piece of bush and that's all.
I found this diagram which suggest there are much more, parts 153858 to 136936
Is the part 153858 the bulkhead bush?
I found part 136936 at rimmers http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-136936 but not the parts in between, are they included in this part or are they different parts?
Thanks
Tom

Re: Help fixing steering column movement
In typical Triumph fashion that diagram is immensely confusing.
The parts you refer to are part of the upper column and you dont need to do anything to any of that.
You just need a new u/j if yours doesnt free up....some do and some dont or are still notchy.
You also need a flexible coupling....or that bit you posted the other day.
Then you need the nylon bush, which just pushes into the hole the column goes through. Flat side inside the car.
Chris Witor also sells the bush...
If you need a new u/j try Jeroen or I will try and find you a decent one.

Re: Help fixing steering column movement
Thanks a lot john! So the only bush i need is the chris witor one :the bulkhead bush
I dont need this one:
http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-136936
(Where does it go by the way?)
Am i right?

Okay.......
http://www.chriswitor.com/proddetail.php?prod=153868P
Above is the bulkhead bush that you need.
Rimmers don't sell Superflex but do sell these
http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-CRC360
whether it is any good or not I cannot comment on because I have no experience of these.
However I can vouch for Superflex 153868P having had one of these for 6 years now on my Dolomite.
Hope you upper UJ frees up okay. Given that it was indeed seized, I suggest it is prudent to replace the lower steering joint
(because it will also have been worked harder than normal, just like the bulkhead bush).
hope this helps,
Ian.
PS the link you posted is for a steering column bearing.

No that one goes in the steel tube that is the upper column.
You only need the nylon one that looks a bit like a hat with a hole through it.
As Ian said...

Re: Help fixing steering column movement
I used one of the pressed ones, not actually from Rimmers, but the same as the UJ they sell.tarynus wrote:I was thinking of replacing the flexible coupling with this part http://www.chriswitor.com/proddetail.php?prod=145377RM as many on the forum seem to think its better than the original, what do you think?
While it makes the steering much, much better than the flexible FM1718, I have had to tighen the lower bolt twice so far this month. Hence I shall be replacing it with one of the cast UJs, to which you have given a link, the next chance I have, which will be soon.

The 16v Slant 4 engine is more fun than the 3.5 V8, because you mostly drive it on the upslope of the torque curve.

Re: Help fixing steering column movement
Hi everyone,
I tried to fit back in the new bulkhead bush this afternoon, but how can i fit it in without taking off the 4 bolt plate, is there a way of shortening the steering column so that i can push in the bush from inside the car?
