Thanks guys, besides I heard the std cam isn't always at 106 degrees. There's some margin to take into account. So after finding TDC a vernier would be very convenient in stead of just make some holes at 2 degrees retarded position (the cam shaft has to be at 108).

Is there a good "idiots guide" on how to set a cam up using the vernier sprocket?

I am going to use one on a new engine and it would be good to know what mistakes to avoid.

If you purchase a vernier sprocket I'll expect a setup manual to be included. If you perform a search on Google you'll get plenty information about past projects. Here's a video:

In short something like this:
- find TDC on cylinder 1
- find specified timing point (like 108 ATDC)
- find full lift at inlet valve cylinder 1
- match!
