Hi Dave, my 1850 has an occasional problem of the jet on the front carb being sticky. You can pull the choke; it starts fine but when it warms up it runs a bit rough. If you press upwards on the jet on the front carb there will be a click; and it will go back to its correct position. I've never found out why.
Tony.

FYI, my carbs are the non-waxstat type. I'm going to pull off the carbs anyway and replace the gaskets with the black instant gasket type sealant so I won't bother to find out if there is a leak. If nothing else, it will eliminate the carb mounts as the source of any air leaks.

Alun, you forgot about the other 2 Pythons (the Terrys).
Karl, I replaced the breather tubes recently so they should be fine.

Proper paper SU gaskets are the thing to use....with hylomar on the manifold side and a thin smear of grease on the other.

If that doesnt seal nothing will - you have distorted faces, probably on the carb adaptors.

That instant gasktet goey stuiff is that last thing you want anywhere near carbs....

Find the hiss with a tube in your ear. Then you will find out how to fix it.

Jonners, you were right. There was an air leak with one of the mating faces of the carb mounts. I also take your point about the instant gasket stuff but it is only a problem if you use too much. I just did a thin bead so it will be fine. It will do until I get some solid carb mounts. I've put together a video and I've posted it to YouTube. Sealing the mounting faces of the carb mounts has cured the problem.
