You should be able to select ALL gears with the engine stationary, if you can't move the stick at all or can't find neutral, I'd suggest that what has happened is that someone has removed the gearstick when it's in a gear and refitted it in the neutral position. This means you are trying to select 2 gears at once and even if the stick is in neutral the gearbox is still in gear. Alun had one just like this only last year! Take the gaiters out and remove the stick, make sure the the selector rails are all in neutral and refit the stick in the correct place. Then try again!

Just to give a yardstick on clutch operation the clutch slave cylinder push-rod should move about 15mm ( measured from mine ).
There is one weak point in the 1850 clutch. That is the release arm. The pivot point in the gearbox breaks through the release arm.
Here is one I broke earlier.
As I remember the part is common with Vitesse and GT6.
