As we all know by now, Jon (Trackerjack) supplies an excellent vented disc conversion kit for Dolomites
using VW discs and Ford (Sierra) sliding calipers.
In order to use the standard Dolomite flexible hose, a short copper brake pipe is required to fit into the caliper
(the same arrangement as the standard set up).
Although this arrangement gave me absolutely no bother I wasn't entirely happy with a copper pipe going into a
sliding caliper.
After some consideration I have had this made by Rally Design (http://www.rallydesign.co.uk)



(Their product description is 195mm CUT LINE S6091-03P - S445-31P)
which is a Goodridge stainless steel brake hose, 195mm long with a 3/8UNF 90 degree female swivel elbow (to fit
the Dolomite flexible hose) and at the other end an M10 male convex seat end (to fit into the caliper). A copper washer
(Rally Design part number RD 1523) is necessary between the male end and the caliper.

Fitting is simple. After first fitting the copper washer onto it, fit the male end into the caliper and then fit the female end
onto the Dolomite flexible.


The pair of hoses cost £29 plus delivery and VAT. The order was despatched same day and received by me the next.
Excellent service .

I went a slightly different route, going for a banjo fitting at the caliper and going all the way to the hard brake line with one braided pipe doing away with the Dolly flexi pipe at the same time. I used braided pipe off the roll and end fittings designed to assembly at home with nothing more than a couple of spanners. All the parts came from Rally Design

I thought I'd ask first, but would anyone benefit from seeing some photos of my rear brake line set up?

I've had copper high-flow lines made up and am running a Jaguar XJ Diff Hopper (goes from hard line on body to a conncetion made at the diff) it's a pretty neat set up that works great with the rear drums, and I have even noticed improved performance in conjunction with a standard cyclinder overhaul kit.

I plan to have the drums re-furbished including a cylinder re-sleeve once the car has made it's maiden voyage to Adelaide at my much trusted brake parts suppliers.

Always interesting to see how other people are doing things

Nice elegant engineering solution there Ian. I too am not sanguine about using a copper pipe on a floating caliper so was going to design or find something similar for my own TJ conversion. Now I find you've done all the hard work for me! Thanks!

Being used to working on bikes I was considering using a banjo type hose myself. This issue is getting a seal where the hose enters the caliper. The Sierra calipers have a recess and getting a copper washer seal on that side of the banjo could be a problem. Although it looks like the washer sits on the outer rim of the recess in the photo.

Where I think would be good for a banjo type braided hose is the flexible clutch hose, especially with the prices Rimmers want for them!

Looking at the Sierra caliper on my dining table I see it can be done easily if you get a copper washer that sits inside the recess and allows the banjo to clear the caliper body. This has to be the way forward and cheaper than getting the hoses made up.

Remember this post is originally from 2009, i purchased the same setup from rally design and it now costs £42 inc vat and p+p

Costed at about £25 a pair (2013 prices) to do it yourself. Note also that top-end cars use banjo type connections like bikes ... I'm going to start with original Sprint & TJ solid copper hoses as I already have them and have a think about it.

I did consider a banjo type hose but decided that the straight male connector was a better option in this instance because the hose
is comfortably routed away from the caliper and suspension parts. (Ford originally used a straight connector.)
