What do people use?

I was going to make use of an eye-bolt through one of the front bumper mounting holes but i don't think it will be sturdy enough...

Those locations are fine. Mine have been there, back and front, for years and used a few time. No issues.

Have managed to bruise my legs on them a few times while working on the car though as they do stick out!
