Today me and my good lady wife decided to have a go at doing the water pump on my TR7 powered Toledo.

all was going well manifold came away with minimal effort and will be cleaned up before refitting.

nuts and washers removed from pump housing but then the problem.....The cover just would not budge.

we tried the method as stated by Jonners in his excellent guide of tapping the cover radialy but no go.

so I have soaked the whole lot in wd40 and plus gas and will have another go tomorow.

was thinking if it would do any harm filling the cavity that the pump sits in with oil to loosed it up for removal
any Idea's folkes???

There is a method of pump removal that involve a long bolt but thats all i can remember about it so not a lot of use there am I, sorry.

I wouldnt put oil in the waterways.

As both the cover and the top of the block where it sits are made from cast iron, you could try a little heat on the outer-facing edge of the cover in case someone has, at some time, been at it with some sort of gasket goo-fadge. If that's the reason it's sticking, then you'd only need a domestic blowtorch or, better yet, a butane soldering iron with a flame tip fitted as that's very fine and much more controllable.
Just a thought, and please don't play the flame on anything aluminium if you decide to try it, you should find that breaking its bond around half of the circumference will be enough to let it be shocked free the rest of the way.

Both of the covers I have here are iron, as is the one on the car but, saying that, they're all earlier, 6-vane ones and it's possible that they used ali on the TR7 covers. Someone who knows for sure will be along shortly to sweep up after me.

Sprint water pump covers ( 6 vane and 12 vane ) are alloy ( well the ones i have are ) so i would assume TR7 ones would be to.

OK, so if it's an aluminium one, pour a kettle of boiling water over it, followed by a pan of icy water, instead of playing a flame on there, you'd be safe at that, meanwhile, I'm off out to the hut to scrape the surface rust off the top of one of those spares, just to see whether I'm dreaming.

Are both Sprint 6 vane covers ali then? Or just the ones which have the rerouted bottom hose connection for access to the alternator pivot?

bit of progress it has loosened up a bit , wel....almost a mm of movement will let it soak for another day see what happens.

it wouldn't hurt to much to gently lever it off. The securing bolts are off, so nothing in theory holding it down except corrosion and the location of the water pump bolt. Gentle levering wouldn't be that naughty.

Were there any gaskets between the housing and the block ?

unfortunatly on my cover there are studs not botls

mind you i have just bought the mother of all pry bar sets so i will be trying these beauties out at the weekend
