Project Dolo-Sx Turbo

#1 Post by knightrider150 »

Well everyone -

Time to make this car a car i guess-

The dolomite has had years of time and effort put into it but its not right - The engine however great it sounds is unreliable BLand simply im bored of waiting for it to break and not being able to use the car as i would like.

I love s13s ive had 4 now. - I love my dolomite- Whats better - FIGHT - sorry - Lets combine the two - I love the dolomite's complete and utter ease at how cool retro it looks. I love the fact its my first car and ive owned it 8 years and counting ;D

I hate the fact its ripped my heart out and stamped on it more than once.

But this thing seriously has a soul, be it a 37 year old workshy brummie soul..

I went and picked it up today and drove it home its been slumming it in a council lock up on the worst estate in the area fully demobilized and looking SO sad

Image

New battery - FIRST TIME FIRES UP :D And now its home ! :D

Image

So the start of something awesome.

Ingredients

Take one SAD stolen recovered s13

Image

Plans

Strip Interior
MOT and Tax it
Drive it Dan in Hemel using hopes and dreams.
Engine out
work magic and shoehorn Ca and gearbox into car.
Various upgrades -

Back to mine
Engine back out
Proper respray in original brook-lands green
Then to auto trim for new vinyl roof and headlining
Underbody protection

Then where ?

Target is Lemans and the ring next year

The car itself is an excellent base . No real rot - Fully uprated suspension and bushing so its good to go otherwise :)

Aim is original looking car with modern mechanical's

So got it home.. stripped it inside nice and solid.

Image

That done this weekend i drove it to the workshop.

Left mine 6am Saturday morning, The car started and ran fine other than losing a bit of oil.

Booked it in for an mot at motec and off I went. All went swimmingly until i got to some horrible town with a name starting with H which i care not for now. – stopped for fuel. Went back out. Would the car start?! No.

Earth strap had fallen off. Battery wasn’t charging. The starter motor also ****ed itself.

I waited for RAC who then refused to tow me.

Spent about an hour and a half asking and pleading and hitting it with a hammer when all a sudden the car decided to play ball!! – got in and drove didn’t want to stop!!

Got to reading. TRAFFIC.

Imagine.

Driving a kettle.
Sitting in traffic in the centre of reading waiting for it to conk out having to use horse whispering like powers to keep it running
Its louder than hell due to a lack of interior
Put the fan on and a jet of oily Smokey super heated air is blasted into the cabin but you have to otherwise it boil over.
I was getting high on the fumes but not a good kinda high.
It was kinda like driving a steam train.

Mercifully maidenhead was kind to me and then i hit all the country lanes to the workshop.

Clutch was getting more and more p155 off and the car was losing power as it was running on the alternator alone.

Somehow 6 hours later i made it to the workshop using the force.

Car died and that was its war cry i think. But its there!!!!

- Even more annoying was the tube on the way back to catch my train . the tube was fully screwed! I had to run... yes ... RUN for my train :( !

Im gonna keep updating as we go.

Ill add some more pics.

Thanks all

I'm sure you already know this, stick the S13 shell up on Driftworks after. Someone will want it for one they've binned into something else.
Good luck with it!

Please excuse my ignorance, but
the Nissan engine is a four cylinder with a timing chain?
The Nissan car is back wheel drive?
Is there enough room for the turbo charger within the Dolomite engine bay?

Are you going to keep the Sprint front subframe or change to an 1850 one?

I have replied to your diff ratio question in the other thread.
Looks an interesting project to me.

I was thinking the same thing but then I thought if Darren can fit a massive turbo...

4pot with rwd and cambelt. - later car is cam-chain but they sound really flat so not an option
There is enough room for the turbo :) top mount solves that. tight bits will be the heater box and the BMC
custom sprint subframe ... whats the difference to an 1850 one ?

It is all because of......

Only the engine mounting brackets on the subframes are different.
1850s have neater angled brackets that I suspect are an easier option to match to bespoke engine mounts.

Thanks for your answers.
I'll bookmark this thread and watch with interest.

Serious update time!!!

Updates :)

Well first we removed the original engine and gearbox (was a heavy lump)

Image

Image

We then assembled the CA engine i.e. fitted flywheel, clutch, spigot bush and gearbox

Image

Then did a little chopping, well grinding to be fair:-
Image

Test fit of the CA, fits quite well

using rover v8 mounts its perfect

Image

S13 rad and Range Rover P38 intercooler works quite well together

Next on the list:-

Fabricate the engine mounting points
Add some strengthening beams to the new mounts and front subframe.
Geabox Mount
Intercooler pipework
Intercooler mounts
Coolant/Heater pipes
V-Band elbow/downpipe
Exhaust
Wiring Loom
Swirl pot
Fuel hoses
Wiring
Propshaft
Gear Shift
Clutch Line
+ a few more bits I'm sure ;D

Many thanks go to the wizard dan and paul for all there hard work so far

Seems a good fit.
That gearbox looks BIG, the rad looks quite well forward into the engine bay but if it doesn't foul the front of the engine then it should be fine.
I used SBD mounts to mount the redtop engine onto the bottom of the turrets. This worked fine. (See other thread - Redtop Sprint)
The major issue I had was the exhaust manifold, a very tight fit in the engine bay.
Good luck with it, seems you are cracking on with it.

Whats an sbd mount ?

The gearbox is long - bellhousing is small

Bracket being made up to make sure the gearstick sits where it should :D

Going to use rover 800 fans really slim and big plenty of clearence

Heater box should fit too

Mounts are for fitting the XE engine but the concept can be adapted for any engine really. I note you are looking at Rover V8 mounts so you probably have it sorted
I had a bespoke two piece prop made up for £135 which I thought was great value. Whick of course you will need for your new gearbox.
I'll be keeping the ehater box with mine as well.

What power/torque you looking for?
