Toledo TS... Information wanted please...!

#1 Post by grifterkid »

Hello there folks...

I know that the Toledo was going to get the sports treatment and be christened the Toledo TS but does anybody know more about it...?!

Did the Sprint do all the sporty stuff for Triumph's compact saloon clientele and render the TS worthless...?!

Does anybody know how it would've been uprated... Would it have had a bigger engine, wider wheels, sportier seats etc...?!

I can only imagine that the Jansport Toledo showed Triumph how it should've really been and they just lost interest... When I say they I think I may mean BL...!!!

If anybody can furnish me with any info' that would be great...! Ta to all...

From what I remember...

Two door only, wore a vinyl roof, had broad stripes down the sides (like a Sprint), unique badging, the boot badges turn up on occasions but have yet to see a front "nose" badge. Driven by a Spitfire, twin carb engine. Dials were unique as there was more than the usual for a Toledo yet it still retained the flat dash.

Cannot remember what type of wheels, though I believe they were steel wheels with the black plastic covers as seen on the later 1850/1500HL.

There was at least one car which did escape the factory as it is described in detail by the then General Secretary of the DSR in the Sprint in Print publication that came out in the 1980s.

And yes, killed off for the development of the Dolomite Sprint project.

If you have the Heritage parts catalogue/hanbook/workshop manaul on CD-ROM/DVD-ROM the Toledo TS parts catalogue is included. If my laser printer wasn't dying I could've printed it off.

2 door toledo which i'm lead to believe was fitted with a 1500 spitfire engine (race tuned with a marina style gearbox)
as said above, fitted with unique badges. also said that there was only 1 ever produced,as the TS never went into full production. - its existance and whereabouts I have no idea.

Nothing special about the engine, it was a bog standard Spitfire 1500 twin-carb unit with overdrive gearbox.. HL hubcaps, headrest bri-nylon seats, vinyl roof, Sprint side-stripes and a rev counter in the dash.

Nothing particularly fancy about it, it was a parts bin special to shift unused 2-door bodyshells!

Very true, I would believe it would be a simple task to reproduce the car, the only item which you would probably have to have made up would be that nose badge, all the rest could be scavenged from scrap cars.

I used to live over the road from the factory and would often see a mustard coloured toledo, which looked different to all the rest ripping up the flechhamstead hwy at speed, thought it must be a test bed, it had a black bonnet and steel wheels the same as a spitfifire 1500.

My laser printer seems to be fine now so I can print it off, scan it and post on here.

I'll have a go with the unique parts.

Thanks a million Toledo Man, that's amazing to see...! It puzzles me why we can see the chin spoiler on the front of the Tolly yet there is no mention of it being fitted in the book...!!! Did it just magically appear on the front of it...?! Cracking stuff indeed...

What a shame those didn't go into production. It looks like a fun little car and I bet they would be quite sought after today.

Oh......

Do keep up Ben :D !

It has been done, James Prince wrote an article on his conversion in Dolly Mixture 99 (October 1999).
He wrote that the engine wasn't as free revving and his concern about the Toledo radiator being too small
had so far proved unfounded, but this hadn't stopped him wondering if he could use an 1850 Dolomite rad instead.

(Jod Clark wrote an article demonstrating that is perfectly practical to use a slant four radiator on an ohv engined car.
DM 107, June 2005)

All these articles (there is over 700) are available on an easy to use DVD from the Club at only £7.50 including postage to any UK address........
