Dolomite sumps
Dolomite sumps
For the 1300/1500, are the Dolomite sumps radically different to those fitted on a Spitfire 13/1500?
Thanks, Aaron

Re: Dolomite sumps
AH Sprite had an A series - never the Standard-derived, mirror image OHV engine as found in Heralds , then there's the fact that they appear to have lumped all Midgets - including those fitted with the Stanpart engines - in with the same number. Far better wait for someone who knows to provide the answer than rely on those rimmers' part numbers as they seem unaware of the A series engine so what else isn't right in the lists?

Re: Dolomite sumps
Hi All, I was just about to ask if a Spitfire 1500 engine c/w Spitfire sump will fit into my Dolly1500HL or will I have to change the sump. I need to remove my current Dolly enging to fit new timing chain kit, crank bearings and oil pump, clean and repaint it,and then refit it. I am intending to fit the Spit engine as a temporary measure to keep it on the road when I "refettle" the original engine and then refit it. Thanks. PJB

Re: Dolomite sumps
You will have to change the sump. On my Toledo I was doing my 2nd engine change. The engine had come out of a Spitfire and when I was putting it in it wouldn't fit. After some head scratching I realized that the Spitfire sump was fouling the subframe. Fortunately, I had a spare sump that had come from the Tolly's original engine (from when I bought the car) and it went straight in without any further problems.

Re: Dolomite sumps
You will also find that the Spit Midget engine has a different flywheel and starter. I wasnt aware of the sumps being diferent though so that
is good info. The block drillings will be the same so you can use your HL sump on the spit engine, but you will need the Spit inertia starter.
These are readily available. Dont be tempted to swap flywheels as you may find the bolt spacings dont match.

Re: Dolomite sumps
Fair enough then! I wasn't sure, as my current engine is from a Dolomite, but I was told (yesterday) that you have to swap the sumps as they're different.
I didn't swap the sumps, and have therefore caused much confusion on the Club Triumph website!

Re: Dolomite sumps
Thanks everybody for your sugesstions. I have a Spit inertia starter motor as I bought a spit engine and non o/d box(as in my Dolly, non o/d) complete with starter. I migh just lift in Spit engine and box for the few weeks that I will be "refettling " the original engine and box,or maybe will fit an o/d box if one turns up in the next few weeks. Thanks. PJB

Re: Dolomite sumps
I think it will work one way but not the other, ie a Dolly/Tolly will only accept a Dolly/Tolly sump but a Spit/Herald will accept either sump as the small chassis car has less crossmembers. I could be wrong though! Steve

Re: Dolomite sumps
I always thought that the 1500 spit had the sump bowl in a different spot to the dollys.
Looking at Rimmers page the late spit has an angled oil pump pickup (GLP118) and the dolly and early spit have a straight pickup (GLP145)? The sumps are also different numbers......
As for 2dollys this may suit you:

It has to be reasonably close. If its not for a dolly I may have an o/d crossmember that I could live without......

Re: Dolomite sumps
Hi Tom, I actually saw this last night and was waiting for a reply from another person about a complete dolly c/w o/d box, that I had 2nd in line option on,unfortunately other bidder took the car. I rang about this one this evening, its from 1500 dolly and is complete with gearstick, bellhousing, slave cylinder, release mechanism and drive shaft,so maybe worth a look. Its located quiet near to me,as you said. Thanks. PJ Byrne.
