Oil light warning (not me!)

#1 Post by Lewis »

I've just had a call from Dan at the side of a country road - and it sounds like his oil pump packed up!

From what he was telling me it'd been a little low on oil, so he'd just topped it up. As he drove down the lane later, the oil light came on and as soon as he depressed the clutch, the engine cut. I think he said it started sounding VERY rattly first.

I asked him to check the filter - it was still in place, not leaking, and there didn't seem to be any unusual fluids or damage to the underside and there was still oil on the stick, albeit smoking gently (then again, they usually are a bit after running).

Just in case it was something random I told him to drop the king lead and crank it briefy, to see if the light went out - which it didn't - and apparently still sounded just as noisy.

I suspect the oil pump drive has gone, or maybe the pickup pipe has come loose? Or is there anything else that can cause something like this? Spun bearing blocking an oilway?

Any opinions? - not ever come across a pump failure so thought I'd ask here for the benifit of Dan so there's some information availiable when he gets back and he can get it sorted ASAP! :!:

Engine size?

Spun bearing - no, that would increase pressure and bolx that bearing only. Even after it was well shot if the bearing moved again to open the oilway I doubt it would be that dramatic or sudden.

I'm told Ford V6 have exactly the same shaft - dizzy skew gear - hex shaft - pump arrangement as the slant engines and they can round off the bottom end of the shaft leading to no pump drive.

As the engine cut I doubt its just the pump, suspect timing gear or shaft / gears putting the valve or ignition timing off. See my could be worse thread.

It's a sprint lump :) Was running perfectly beforehand - was doing about 4500RPM when it caved.

What type of oil filter? Not the one with the bits of cardboard on the ends I hope?

That's what I was thinking - breaking up and blocking the oil ways. Not sure, didn't ask at the time as it seemed a little irrelevant!

I think I've mentioned that to him before so I don't think he'd have got one with the cardboard edge.

I’m with tin here. Had the same symptoms years back: jackshaftgear snapped off jackshaft (caused by w/pump skewgear failure).

Take oilfillercap of to check if camshaft rotates; take dizzy cap of to check if dizzy is turning. If 1st is yes and 2nd no, it’s the jackshaft gear. If lucky (and no further piston/valve damage has been done) the engine doesn’t have to come out to replace the jackshaft -> it can be taken out through the front grill by releasing the engine support and lifting the engine a little…

Good luck

It's alright, he'll be on here later! Thank you kindly for the offer though in advance!

I just thought I'd get the ball rolling now so he doesn't have to wait about :)

Come on Lewis - blocked oil ways, imploded filter, pump dropped off the car five miles back or any other oil system fault would not cause it to stall. The oil system just preserves the engine, it does not enable function like ignition does for example. Tell him to connect up the king lead again, if it fires I'm wrong and it is the oil system (turn straight off again). If it won't go it's summut else.

When it gets back static check the timing, bet you get different readings depending if the engine is turned forwards or backwards.

Oi! I didn't say that! Don't make me come over there and stamp on all your toys  I was making no reference to any of those failures causing it to stall, I added that merely for reference, just as I was told what happened, in case there's something typical of that failure.

This is rather irrelevant anyway, it's got no pressure, so it ain't goin' anywhere!

got to go with rob bearing failure here, symptoms are as spun rod bearing ,....... bearing gets hot sticks to crank blocks oil ways press clutch engine stalls because bearing is sticking itself to the journal and audible with rather noisy knocking sounds

but it could well have a rounded pump drive the end result is the same though due to no pressure

Thanks Lewis for the thread!

Well then, it was a little on the low side on oil when it went. So then I topped it up before I did anything else.

Well the engine did start, then I turned it off asap. So it still runs, just no pressure.

As Lewis said it stalled on me as a pulled up and put the clutch in. I didn't notice a high temp for the engine at all by the way.

When I popped the bonnet the first thing I noticed was a little white smoke near the oil filter area and slightly towards the front of the car. Plus I noticed a little bit of oil around the dip stick but only lightly on there.

No idea what filter is in it to be honest, was going to replace in in a few weeks as I was planning a big service.

So then, what shall I do from here?

knightrider150, Thanks for your kind offer!
