Which water pump????

#1 Post by IanMack »

Ive just been reading an article on the sprint engine from Retro cars magazine circa Jan 05. In it it talks about water pumps and states that

'the early type with six deeper curved vanes is the best option'
and
'the 12 vane version has been known to break up'

As i was just about to change my water pump fo a 12 vane as i thought (back in the day!!) that these were best, thought id better ask first, anyone??

I've never known a pump to break up!

The early six vane had shallower vanes, they revised it to a deeper vane intermediately, before developing to 12 vanes.

The works cars eventually used a 12v with alternate vanes milled out to reduce cavitation and this is meant to be optimum when pressing the car hard. Some say the works eventually reverted to 6v...

For normal road use with everything else in good order it doesn't seem to make a blind bit of difference which is used.

Don't forget if you change from a 6 to a 12 you'll need to change the pump housing as well.
