Home...Advice Wanted

#1 Post by hutch76 »

Well, reluctantly home from the hols., and can't express how underwhelmed I am to be back! :( Have been giving next weeks 'new'arrival some thought, though admittedly not until the airport coming home, when I found I had 5 hours to kill!!

Here's my thoughts. Poly bushes throughout. 45's with fast road cam. Sports exhaust already on it. Am told there's a slight whine on the overun, so replacement diff or lsd (if one comes up) also required.

Main wish is for good straight line acceleration. No real desire to mess about with springs or ride height.

As most of you know, originality has always been my thing with the Sprints, so this is all a bit new to me. So, if anyone has suggestions on either a better way to do things, or what else I should add, please say.

Obviously, Malc will be getting a call shortly, and I'll be buying all I can thru the club. Other bits such as 45's, manifold etc. if anyone has suggestions who to call, it would be very much appreciated.

Due to head to Bristol next Thursday btw, so I'll start a thread nearer then
to guess how far up the road I get.

As nobody has agreed/disagreed with the planned mods., I'll assume I've got it right?

As I need to source quite a few bits, can anyone give me any reports of their dealings (good or bad) with Jigsaw, as plan to try them for some of the tuning parts?

I've dealt with Quiller, Fitchett in the past, and intend NOT to use the best known supplier, but haven't used them, so any help appreciated.

Poly bushes, that's easy, Chris Witor or Jigsaw. 45s, easy, Ebay. Manifold, not so easy, they do come up on Ebay from time to time. Fast road cam, easy, Newman cams, Kent cams & Piper cams, don't forget the vernier pulley, easy but expensive, Sprintparts, Kent cams.

If you want acceleration you could go for a 4.1:1 final drive. Not so good on long journeys though.
Sprintless for the first time in 35+ years. :boggle2: ... Still Sprintless.

Engines, Gearboxes, Overdrives etc. rebuilt. PM me.

Mart, will give you a ring towards end of week to pick your brain, if ok? Plan to get the flexible friend out and try and get as many bits together asap.

Will go thru boxes tomorrow and see what bits I already have, and take it from there. For some reason, I had it in my head that the club did poly bushes.

I stand to be corrected but I don't think you need 45s for fast road spec. I think you can safely widen your search to include 2" SU or 40s. iirc the correct choke size for fast road (170 - 180bhp approx / standard rev limit) will fit in 40 or 45. Or is that delorto I'm thinking of :?:

Rate adjustable shocks at least are worth putting on the list as getting the weight transfer working to your advantage helps put the power down.

As Mart says Sprintparts. Lots of lovely go quick toys on there.

Advice

Thanks Tinweevil. This is the reason I posted this. I figured that people had tried various combinations to get as much power down. Some were wrong, some right. I just want to benefit from the knowledge gained, and try to get it right first time around, mainly because I don't really have the cash around for trial and error!

I've seen Sprintparts site, my only concern is the amount we have to pay for duty and shipping. I've had to buy nearly everything for the '34 from the U.S. and by the time these have been paid it works out almost £ for $, even with the good exchange rate. Funnily enough, the Coupes body was bought and shipped from NZ.

similar spec to my lump really, except i'm doing the bushes, springs, shox, cooling etc, basically the lot.

it's really a matter of how far you want to take it. i'd also consider a couple of kg's off the flywheel and an engine balance, that in itself could make as much difference as whacking on the 45's, good acceleration is based on how quickly the engine can build revs under load, and with less inertia to spin you'll be surprised how much more lively and free revving the engine will feel

i would certainly seriously think about the suspension n brakes, if you make a car have the ability to pull like a rocket you'll want it to stop better and handle better too, or you'll probably scare yourself
