MLM 317V

#1 Post by griffc »

Hi - I'm the current owner of MLM - seems its been around on this forum before! Just done the head gasket and had the rad recored - one strange knock to sort out (sounds like the gearbox is loose) and it'll be out on the road again...

Regards

MLM317V is the brown 1850 form A2A, the other survivor is now blue.
After it left Kudos productions it landed in the hands of a chap who tried to 'do it up', my neighbour then bought it and a lot of time and money was spent putting things right, he then sold it to a guy in Dorset.

good luck with the car.

welcome, I am glad you found the forums.

The gearbox noise might be a rubber mounting/exhaust/gearbox clearance. Is it most noticeable on takeoff ?

welcome again.

Hi all and thank you for the welcome.

I intend to drive it around in the summer then start on the body in the winter. When it gets warm it seems to start missing a bit causing the engine to rock - you can hear the knocking then at standstill. Need to get it on a ramp and start shoving things. Driving along the knocking sounds like the front offside suspension - I'm guessing it's the exhaust or gearbox mounting and hoping a easy fix.. My mate did the head gasket when I wasn't there so the (inevitable) pile of left over bits probably contain something vital.

Ah, good old Wiskowski's Second Technical Law.

Wiskowski stated,
"The more something is taken apart and put back together, the higher the chance of enough spares left over to make a second original".

I've never been able to disprove his 2nd technical law.

I'm the ex-owner from Dorset. It was my first car. Except some oncoming rust that needed attention it was a good car until the head gasket went on the original engine, hence why it now has a 1500 O/D in it - it was all I had available at the time. It was certainly a comfortable and smart looking car when I had it.

Thought I'd post an update - the knocking sound was a broken engine mount - it was OK when I replaced the other side but then obviously got jealous and broke itself.

Work on the car is sporadic to say the least and it now has no MOT and a list of jobs: lower balls, tie rod ends and sills - oh and the read diff decided to let all its oil out so a pinion seal too ...

If memory serve me right I replaced both lower ball joints when Chris had it so they haven't covered many miles, are you sure the joints need replacing how much play is there?
