Diff and propshaft flange

#1 Post by Maidstonerob »

Hi all!
I need to replace the diff pinion oil seal and have removed the 4 bolts at the flange. Is there a lip where the two interlock as i still cant separate the prop from the diff or is it just the time these have spent together? I dont want to get heavy handed with it unless thats necessary.
I have the later type propshaft and tried unbolting the centre carrier but the prop still wouldnt come off the diff.

Thanks in advance
Rob.

On a Sprint you would just use a rubber mallet and give the prop a few firm whacks, as they do bind together over time.
Sprintless for the first time in 35+ years. :boggle2: ... Still Sprintless.

Engines, Gearboxes, Overdrives etc. rebuilt. PM me.

Just run the engine in gear and put the handbrake on and it should pop off.
I've had the same thing with the flanges on Spitfire driveshafts and that method works for them.

Mind you it does sound messy. If you dont fancy it just give it a soak in plus gas overnight and try a coal chisel between the flanges.
That should also do the trick.

Not wanting to mention sucking eggs and all that, but you have checked if it has a solid or collapsible spacer, and if collapsible, how to change the seal??
Just may save you some serious grief...............

Thanks for the warning fella had read about this issue and its the later type with lock nut not split pin so as i understand it I have to count off how many turns and refit to the same position it came off or the collapsible spacer will be knackered and some sort of massive strip down of the diff would be necessary.
I have marked the nut and shaft. My attempt at fashioning a tool to lock the flange so i could undo the nut was unsuccessful as it simply bent the tool!
I will be having another crack tomorrow so if you have any tips or i am missing anything then please go right ahead.
Thanks.

I use a long bar with 2 bolt holes at the right pitch to go on the axle flange, then brace it against a block of wood on something substantial on the body
and undo the nut.
Its pretty tight and a fairly nervy operation sadly....

That is a very well kept underside! Very tidy indeed mine is more of a rust/dust look!

Hi all
New to this sort of thing.
Got a 1971 Dolomite 1850 4spd manual. Want to know where I can get a good used diff as mine has lotsa lash and clicks. Whines too. G/box rebuilt so that's ok.
Any pointers welcome!
