Works sprints at Goodwood

#1 Post by trackerjack »

Great stuff, however I had to smile as 7 years ago Anthony Reid came round Goodwood in my Sprint but sadly we did not click.

Nice! I the next bit "firing on four" with engine sound, I noticed the cam cover has an oil pipe going into the cam cover to feed extra oil to the cam/rockers. I d like to see that from the underside. :)

Both built ands run by yours truly.

The oil pipe is necessary to prevent premature cam/bucket wear due to higher than normal valve spring pressures.

Ah yes I have seen that mod elsewhere and thought that lining the cam bucket bores with a Phospher bronze bush might help too.

All I can say is a 1 min 33sec round Goodwood is very good and am looking forward to seeing them race next year.

All credit to you Ken, they look great.
Care to share a pic of the underside showing the pipe? :)

Some engines at idle on a big lump cam just sound McDonalds-car-park-badly-tuned-escort lumpy, that otoh sounds [barry white] lumpy [/barry white] :-D

Is a pump upgrade needed to feed the rocker oil pipe?

No doubt those that have done this mod might pass on the details but I remember the racing Stag that the engine builders stated that uprated oil pumps cavitate on these engines and I believe them.
I expect that located beneath the cam cover a Ford Pinto spray bar is used as it would be childs play to install.
I doubt the oil pump has any trouble supplying all the oil needs.
The only problem with these engines as you well know is the jackshaft :wary: once they wear the oil gets scarce at the top end, however a pressure gauge would def show this.

I did think about the pinto spray bar but then if the lobes are not the same distance apart more work needed there. I have a feeling that theres some brake pipe under there.

Not necessarily. I stripped an engine that had okay oil pressure (33/34psi hot at idle) and the jackshaft bearing was absolutely knackered.

Shows how good the standard pump is then :D

Years ago I spoke to a guy that worked on the Sprint at the factory and he told me that some blocks were so bad the jack bores were not in line on some engines from new...........guess those died early.

I did never seen a block with an inline jackshaft bore. All the keep U plates are worn on one side what indicates a bore what is is not flush with the front machining.

The reason the top end is starved if the jackshaft bore is worn is because the flat on the jackshaft boss acts as a secondary pump to lift oil into the head; so long as the bottom end was still tight, good oil pressure would show because its measured at the transfer housing.

I think it's not a pump but a valve. Opens 3 times per jackshaft rev. Same as on camshafts of ohv 4 and 6 cil. triumphs.

And there is me thinking that the three flats were there just in case BL could not match the grovve in the jackshaft with the drilled hole in the block
