Indicator relay on flat dash cars.

#1 Post by Toledo Man »

This topic came up in Tuesday's West Yorkshire meeting. Bob said that to get to the relay, the whole dashboard had to be removed. I find this difficult to believe. I'm sure that I had to change the one on my Dolomite 1300 and all I had to do was have a feel round the back of the dashboard. I parted company with my Dolomite 1300 in 2008 so I can't remember exactly. I've just dug out one of my Toledo workshop manuals (I no longer have my Haynes which I gave to a local Dolomite 1300 owner a few years ago) and it says that it is located at the bottom near the wiper switch. I would imagine that the later flat dash Dollies are similar.

Does anybody have a definitive answer? Bob, if you're reading this please post your comments.

Whoever told him that needs a slap. It's the same as the curved dash, held in approx the same place, held in by the same metal clip.

As with all other Dollies and Toledos there are 2 relays, 1 for indicators and 1 for hazard lights the indicator one is normally located behind the dash at the bottom rear edge and outboard of the steering column, in a metal clip. The hazard relay position is somewhat more whimsical depending on age and model but is USUALLY somewhere similar but inboard of the column. They can be distinguished from each other by the colour of the wires feeding them. the indicator relay has 2 green wires (one with a different trace) whilst the hazard relay has one green with a trace and one purple wire which denotes its permanent live status.

Thanks for bringing this up Dave.

Since we spoke about it I've had a couple of goes at finding it, the latest this am with no joy. My car has had a cigar lighter fitted in the past above the rear screen heater switch and all I can find is them. I'm wondering if the lighter is blocking the way to it.

Can someone advise me if it is mounted on the back of the facia or on the bulkhead somewhere.

Its not an urgent thing to sort out it was just to look to swop the flasher unit for an electronic one to stop the indicators from slowing down to almost stopping with headlights and brake lights on

Thanks.

The flasher unit SHOULD be attached by a metal clip to the back of the fascia. It is not unknown, however, for the clip to fail or go missing, or for a non standard round tube unit to be fitted which won't fit the clip. In these cases, what usually happens is the wires just get tied round any convenient bit of loom or anything else handy and the unit tucked out of the way to stop it hanging down in plain sight. It should also be noted that the Dolly flasher unit doesn't particularly look like one to the inexperienced eye, being a flat oblong silver case, about 1" x 1/2" x 1/2", one flat side being black plastic with just 2 spade terminals on it.
