cvh idle problem

#1 Post by andrew_27 »

hi, as well as my Toledo Ive got a mk2 fiesta 1.4 CVH which today has started to work itself, it wont now idle on anything less than half choke. If i try to put the choke in the engine splutters and dies. I can keep it going by keeping the throttle down or by having the choke half out. Ive checked for vacuum leaks etc in the air intake and cant seem to find anything visibly wrong... does anyone have any ideas?? as sadly its busses until i can sort this!

over the past few years of carb fettling ive found either a blocked idle jet, or a failed idle stop solenoid usually is the culprit behind a sudden idle problem , the choke masks the issue well because it raises the idle speed and allows vacuum to draw from the main jet circuits

vacuum leaks commonly come from overtightening the base nuts such that the carb flange warps and lifts off the gasket!

I have 2 CVH engined Quantum 2+2's one a Turbo which gives no trouble and the other if its been left standing for a while (month or two) starts but wont run properly just like yours, however after cooling down and restarting it runs fine.
I suspect the hydraulic cam followers are a bit sticky and the heat releases them.
track action maniac.

I would look at the fuel cut off solenoid as has been suggested above. My 205 with a Weber carb did the exact same thing a few months ago, replacing the solenoid cured it straight away.

thanks for the replies! Turns out it was some sort of blockage in the jets, took them out and cleaned them and it ran perfectly... i fitted an in-line filter too just to try and prevent it happening again
