What happened in your garage this weekend

#1 Post by series111 »

Hi :bluewave:

I thought I'd ask what everybody did in there garage this weekend (keep it clean) I replaced my old rubber carb mounts for the clubs alloy one's. Then afterwards went for a drive in the New Forest to try them out. :D

Cheers Dave.

I just thought it was time to give the old 1500HL a start; it hadn't been anwhere since Christmas Eve and had been in hibernation since then, with one of those battery chargers attached that puts a charge in when it feels like it needs one. Started second turn and ran fine.
I've no need to go anywhere in Dolly at this time of year, the roads are an elecrolytic corrosion compound of NA CL2, so I let this corrosive mix do it's worst on our Mitsubishi. Dolly stays tucked up indoors.

I don't blame you for not going out there it is cold, not to much salt on the roads around here.

Have just this minute brought one of those battery charger/conditioners for Dollys battery.

Prepared my car for a (partly) respray.
Bodywork was repaired and resprayed in november/december after a small accident. Unfortunately the wrong colour.

Today, I spent ages cranking the engine before remembering, finally, that I took the rotor arm out as a vague theft prevention. I spent ten minutes staring out the windscreen trying to remember where the rotor arm had been "safely" stored. Found it. She started after that, first time since Boxing Day. I found there is definitely a problem with the alternator (When I last took the car out in the dark the lights went yellow and the volt gauge read 11.5 volts. Oh dear. Thankfully I didn't turn the engine off as I didn't think she would re-start). Similar today, showing 13volts but this crept down when I turned the headlights on, down to 11. Last year the opposite happened, over 15 volts showing, nearly blew every bulb in the car, I thought it had been fixed. Grr, radiator off next then. Anyway, also had a clear out of the garage (ie. re-arranged my junk so that I'm less likely to smack my shin on a battery when I walk in to it). Made a list of things that need fixing and realised it'll take me ages to do it all. Oh well. *sigh*.

Unfortunately, I don't have a garage any more (just a carport). I've done nothing because the battery is still on charge with a desulphator attached. It has been on constant charge since Thursday night. What I've noticed is that the voltage being produced by the charger and desulphator has gradually been going down. I'll be pumping up the tyres and putting the battery back on for the next West Yorkshire meeting. I'll be fitting solid carb mounts to mine at some point this year.

I made some solid car mounts back in the 90,s and made some spare ones that I later sold on Ebay in the 2000,s...................got a message from someone quizzing me as the TDC made these  I like to be first sometimes :D

Today I packed one Dolomite part, a pair of chrome kit car headlights, a pair of IVA friendly wing mirrors for a kit car, a remote servo and finally a Ford 4x4 front propshaft all sold on Ebay for a tidy some to pay for track days this coming summer.

I also started plumbing in a small extra radiator in place of a heater to keep the special that I have built from getting too hot.

Oh and threw away a pile of sprint rear brake shoes and springs.

I am declutering prior to a proposed house move next year.
track action maniac.

Opposite problem here, 30 degrees and humid!

Previous weekend was three days of racing at the NZ Festival of Motor Racing. Car had a bad bout of brake shudder, even after checking wheel bearings, disc run out and upper and lower ball joints. Upper nearside was replaced as were drag strut front (poly) bushes. These usually cut up after 4 or 5 meetings. The replacements supplied were far too soft and cut out after 2 races so had to replace with old rubber to keep going.

So this past weekend was taking off the drag struts and am having special bushes made locally. Also the rack came out as the bush in the end of the tube on nearside was wearing and had some play. I've been told a nylon replacement would be better, but no luck in finding one or anyone who will make one. Also oil seal was weeping into the drum on nearside rear, kept in check by a copious washout of brake cleaner every second race, so that axle that side came out. More work to do when it cools down but I have another couple of weekends before the next meeting.

I must post some videos as the racing comprised of the maximum grid size allowed of 46 cars (with reserves to fill up as cars dropped out) and most of the races were 8 lap handicaps with of course the slowest at the front, fastest let off last. Certainly a busy place out on the circuit, four wide at times on the main straight and two wide around most corners!

Managed a 6th and a 9th in the two that count for series points, but got swamped in the other two and dropped from 4th row to well down the order in the late 20s in the others. Once a group of faster cars catch you keeping out of the ways costs many seconds.

went for a drive. Part of which is here:

Does more good to your car than leaving it in the garage fretting about salt.

I changed some headlight bulbs in the GFs car, Re assembled & fitted the carbs on the Jensen and a few other bits on her. Tidied the other two garages a bit, you can even just about see the Sprint again.

Helped a fellow club member (OECC Central Island Branch) with
his TR6. Since moving from Alberta last summer, his car has had
running problems. It was on triple Webers. I suggested he convert
back to twin SU HS6s. After sorting out some vacuum leaks (breather
inputs to carbs from valve cover not connected, vacuum port for
distributor no connected) it running much better. We have no access
to a dyno or a shop with extensive jets and venturis spares for Webers
so the SUs were the best solution.
