1500hl woes
Can anybody tell me if the gearbox/overdrive supports in the photo are right for the 1500HL?
I've had it converted to overdrive by a Triumph dealer but am getting severe vibration at low revs from second to third and to some extent from third to fourth.

I don't know if the 1500 cross member is different but that looks like a Sprint one.
Sprintless for the first time in 35+ years.

gearbox mounting - TKC 1044 - appears to be fitted upside down.PJB

The cross member is the same on the 1500. 1850 & sprint.
The mount should be fitted above the cross member and not below the member as shown in the photo

I agree....
The mount is the wrong side of the cross member. All dollies with o-d use the some cross member to btw.
As it is it will all be too low and may well allow exhaust bits to touch bodywork.

Yes,Mounting should be fitted to the upper side of crossmember,but it need to be fitted other way up.

Richard, thank you for the photos, these are invaluable. I used your overdrive conversion article in a back issue of the magazine to source the parts for my 1500HL but I had difficulty locating everything required and wasn't 100% sure I had all the right parts. I'm still minus a bracket that hold the downpipe to the side of the gearbox and currently have a "wanted" request for that item, elsewhere on the club site.
When it was time to do the overdrive conversion I gave the relevant magazine article to the Triumph specialist (never got it back) with all the parts I'd assembled and was pleased to get the car back very quickly. But it did drone badly going from second to third at low revs and I have to gun it harder in second before dropping in to third to compensate for this. I did wonder whether the noise/vibration was down to the gearbox mount (my local independent garage owner thought it didn't look right), or whether it was caused by the down pipe passing within a hair's breadth of the clutch bell housing, and touching under load. I've attached (hopefully) 2 further pictures showing another shot of the gearbox mount in situ, and one showing how close the down pipe is to the bell housing. I've ordered a new gearbox mount.

Richards photos show the correct assembly of the crossmember and mounting,no need to order a new mounting,the one you have is correct,just assembled incorrectly.

By Richard. I am glad you found my article useful. It is now sometime since I wrote that article for Dollymixture and I can see I should have included the details on the mounting arrangements. I hope someone will come up with an exhaust bracket for you.
I have not had a problem with the exhaust hitting the bell housing but I have had the exhaust being very close and possibly hitting the body of the car. See photo
I have found that on some of my cars I can not remove the bell housing without removing the exhaust downpipe.

I think PJB may be correct, looks to be upside down as well as on the wrong side.
Pardon a thread diversion but that lower fixing on the clutch master looks in that photo like the bolt isn't long enough, you should have thread protruding from the nut. OTOH it might be correct but loose, or OTOOH, absolutely fine

If you are still short of a mount, it is possible to modify the non-overdrive mount to support the exhaust. You just need to cut a few bits off to make it work.

I found this in one of my bits boxes. But I see from the parts book that there are 3 variants of this exhaust bracket.
UKC 4097 for Manual cars.
UKC 4099 for Automatics.
UKC 4098 for 1500 Overdrive.
Is this any use to you ?
