Re painting brake drums?

#1 Post by alolympic »

A quick piece of advice please.
I have the rear drums currently sat in a bucket of rust removing stuff.
I now plan on giving them a repaint but I wanted to check which areas to leave bare.
I presume the inside edge has to be left bare, where the shoes meet, but the rest of the drum can be primed and painted, including the rest of the inner area?
Thanks in advance.

I guess you're right, braking surface is only area to leave blank. Other area's (especially where brake fluid will run when cylinder leaks) can benefit from a protecting layer. The drum itself won't suffer that quick from a bit of corrosion I guess, the 'back plate' seems more important: cylinder is mounted against it and it is made of thinner material.

I usually don't paint the front surface where the wheel will sit.

The other area is the inside of the hole that locates on the half shaft, this is a snug fit, so any paint could make it difficult to get on or off.

Personally I think its a waste of time but if you must just paint the outside in something heat resistant. Painting backplates is much more worthwhile.
