1500 restoration - help with suitablity of wings

#1 Post by Holytoledo! »

Hi all,

Welcome a bit of advice here. My 1500fwd wings are shot all around the front stretching back from the eyebrow and need replacing soon. I have obtained, what I think is a good set of used wings from a sprint, that have been taken off well but are rusted at the bottom where they fit into the front outer valance. Both sides have this but the main wings and wheel arches are perfect. Could these be used and could a decent body shop merge these in with welding?

Apologies for my lack of knowledge but I'd welcome any thoughts that you might have?

Cheers,

John

It all depends on just how rusty the wings are and how far back they have to grind to get decent thick metal they can weld to. The more they cut away, the more they need to replicate...

Depends on how much you're willing to pay really. It'll all be fixable with enough time/money.. You can either get neat repair panels made (expensive) or find several wings and make a good one (potentially expensive, may be hard to do for troublesome areas).

What I did is use club panels for the bottom of the wings (excellent panels btw). Then the bits which were not available I made up by hand and welded in (cutting rust out), resulting in something which looked kinda like a wing, then shape with filler. I'm fully aware it'll probably all go to s*** in a few years, but by then we may have steel wings being re-produced by the club or something ;)
