oil leak!

#1 Post by RJF_70 »

Found my oil leak finally, it seems to be leaking from the nut on the back corner of head, corner nearest to heater motor (right side if you stand in front looking at the car) with a copper washer around it. Looked in Haynes but doesn't mention it holding anything in the head, but don't want to undo it just in case, so thought I'd check here first. Will try and get photo later but just started lashing down here so put her back in garage..lol

This is the nut in question right on the corner under the rocker, has a copper washer that I think is the culprit of my oil leak, core plugs are dry, rocker gasket is new and seems to be oil tight. Does it hold anything in place in the head or is it a blank and therefore safe to take out and renew washer?
Cheers Rich

Thats just a blank, some people use it to connect an additional oil feed to the rockers.
You can undo it no problem. Try a little sealant on the threads as well as a new washer.

Worth adding that that corner is notorious for incurable oil leaks from the head gasket.
Well, it is curable, but rather involved and not worth the effort unless you are taking the head off anyway.
(ie drill the oilway out in the head and block, fit a short length of pipe with sealant so the gasket has to do no sealing there. Other fixes include machining to take an o ring, but it is usually just a slight weep so not worth doing)
