TR 7 advice please
TR 7 advice please
Hi a friend of mine has been ripped off by a so called expert with a TR7 and we recovered it today at great financial loss to him (the owner).
It has the worse body repair respray I have ever seen and the car has been stripped of all interior etc.
Reason Im asking is !st which is the best forum for TR7 related info?
2nd I only realised today this 7 is an auto. How common is an auto?
His original dream was a V8 swap but Im wondering if there was some value in it being an auto?
Cheers
Tony

Have a look here for some TR7 info.

Re: TR 7 advice please
There's not enough value in the auto to make it worth keeping, they are not exactly common but there are a few about, a relic of the car being designed for the US market, everyone knows yanks can't drive stick!
I'd love to see a 7 with a V8 OTHER than a Rover one though, how about a Lexus, or Audi, or BMW 4.4? Or even a blown Jag?

Re: TR 7 advice please
Thanks for the link Harvey, its a starting point.
Steve I did wonder about other engine choices too, Lexus being the cheapest out there but they are quite large head wise and getting manual boxes on them is a challenge as the toyota boxes are getting expensive now.
This car may end up as a breaker as theres not much value in them, although peoples attitude towards 1850 dollys is turning a bit for the rarity of autos so a few years may see a change in the 7's status maybe?
Cheers

Re: TR 7 advice please
It might be worth keeping the auto for the rarity value alone. How about fitting the LT77 gearbox if it is going to be converted to manual? One of my Club Triumph friends (I'll call him Martin) has fitted the LT77 to one of his TR7s. One specialist I can highly recommend is S&S Preparations who are friendly and knowledgeable. They're also handy for us 1850/Sprint owners with the parts overlap.

Re: TR 7 advice please
Depends on if its hard top or convertible.
A decent convertible is worth preserving even in auto form, which is quite rare although I personally wouldn't want one.
Some drivers can only do autos for medical reasons too, so why deprive them of an opportunity.
A hard top auto is a bit of a harder sell. If its in a state I doubt putting it back useable would be viable cost wise.

Re: TR 7 advice please
it is convertible. Its got no engine or box with it so its the just the console and pedals that make it auto (plus the vin I suppose) Its unfortunate their doesn't seem to be any value in these cars at all. Not my cup of tea I admit but you would think someone would be happy to have one.
Ill start breaking it next week if theres interest in bits. Im watching Robsports stuff atm to see if any of that sells

Owning a 4.2l 300bhp TR8 myself (alright a TR7 V8...
) I can vouch for them actually being a decent car - The V8 really does change it into an entirely different animal. It's easily the fastest Triumph out there and a good, cheap muscle car (yeah okay, I know you can argue it's an Austin design with a Rover engine...) Of course you could always plop the Sprint engine in it very easily, which again changes it into a much more fun car

I recently drove a Jag XJ6 (05) with a 2.7 V6 Diesel and 5 speed auto, what a weapon! You could hardly tell it was a diesel, it was so quiet and smooth. Jags like this can be had for more or less pennies nowadays, it would keep it auto to save swapping out all the pedals, go like stink and give good fuel economy too. You'd probably need a 3.08 TR8 diff though! (and someone who loves wiring in spaghetti quantities!)

The 7 is a fine car when in good nick and so much better on suspension than any other Triumph in as much as able to provide comfort and cornering and handling.
If I were to pick a car that will rise steeply in price in a few years time it would be one of these.

There is also a quite good page on the book of face....Triumph TR7 Owners Page.
The other FB one that is just called.... Triumph TR7.... is a bit rubbish.
