Rerouting 1500 exhaust

#1 Post by cleverusername »

I am getting a stainless downpipe to replace my knackered one, the middle section OK and my back bodge rear is OK for now.

I do fancy building my onw system at some point, you can get pre-made curves on ebay. However the current routing of the exhaust means many curves and much expense. Also it seems a silly way to design it. It starts offside, then crosses to the nearside, only to go back to the offside.

Is there any reason it couldn't all be relocated to the offside. Giving a straight exhaust, except the upwards bendo clear the rear axle? Why did Triumph design it the way it is? Am I missing something?

The crossover downpipe mates up with the same back bits as an 1850.

There is no reason I can think of why it couldnt all go down the drivers side except that all known dolomite over axle bits go on the passenger side. It also picks up the mounting point on the handbrake cable support. All easy enough to get round with the right bends.

So you can fit 1850 back sections? Any advantage to that?

As for changing the exhaust design, it was just an idle thought, but a straighter exhaust would be more efficient, less length, and less interruptions to gas flow. Of course as you say, new exhaust mounts would be needed,

Only the rear section is the same. The 1500 mid pipe has the same silencer box with a bend to meet the 1500 downpipe.

Old and new type dolomite exhausts can be mixed and matched as the join by the handbrake mounting works either way.
