Rerouting 1500 exhaust

I am getting a stainless downpipe to replace my knackered one, the middle section OK and my back bodge rear is OK for now.
I do fancy building my onw system at some point, you can get pre-made curves on ebay. However the current routing of the exhaust means many curves and much expense. Also it seems a silly way to design it. It starts offside, then crosses to the nearside, only to go back to the offside.
Is there any reason it couldn't all be relocated to the offside. Giving a straight exhaust, except the upwards bendo clear the rear axle? Why did Triumph design it the way it is? Am I missing something?
