Auto Box Noise

#1 Post by AlanH »

I am getting quite a nasty noise as my auto box changes from second to third.

It it seems to be somewhere between a rasping noise and the rrrrrrrr you get when you roll your tongue on the top of your mouth. It then changes up and the noise goes.

I'm hoping it's an adjustment not a new box.

Check the kickdown cable. If it is badly adjusted it can make the noise you've described. Don't forget to check the fluid level as well. I'm sure Harvey can offer you the benefit of his knowledge and wisdom.

Check the kickdown cable.
Does it need tightening or loosening?

You need to adjust it until you have a 1.5mm gap between the threaded part of the outer sheath and the crimped stop on the inner cable. I can post the relevant page from the factory workshop manual if it will help.

Could be a partly blocked filter - be worth dropping the sump and cleaning it all out. Of course if the sump is full of swarf and bits of friction material theen you have found the answer sadly.. I can't see it being the kickdown cable.

I can't see it being the cable adjustment either, especially if the shift speeds are happening when they should. Have you noticed any problems with REVERSE?

The only thing that I have noticed is that it is harsh when engaging reverse (drive seems OK).

Try engaging REVERSE, then back into PARK or NEUTRAL, then a second engagement of REVERSE. If the second engagement is less harsh than the first then that's most likely play in the drivetrain. If you don't get the same noise as you get on the 2-3 upshift when engaging or driving in REVERSE then it probably eliminates what I was thinking of.

Check the condition of the fluid. It will tell you the general condition of the transmission. If it is cherry red and doesn't have a burnt smell the transmission should be fine (Harvey will know better than me so I'll bow to his superior knowledge). Here's that page from the factory workshop manual on adjusting the kickdown cable.
