Battery positive lead connections.
Battery positive lead connections.
I am replacing my battery and leads. I forgot the positive has the 4 point connector near the subframe. Has anyone managed to get one apart without wrecking it and re-use it ? If not can these still be sourced or are there alternatives ?

You should be able to remove the black shround - there is a locking clip on one of the sides and it just peels apart.
James Paddock have one similar http://www.jamespaddock.co.uk/PartImages/150640.jpg

Yes I peeled it apart ok and disconnected the leads but the connector is crimped solid on the old lead. Not sure what you have posted will work as the 4 connections need power from the positive lead which is why the original is cut back and crimped.
Thanks

Re: Battery positive lead connections.
Pauls picture looks right but I cannot find it on Paddocks website.
Mike is there a chance you could post a picture of the open connector?
I've had a look around and found many two point 170a capable junction boxes, but not 4 connector ones.
I'm held up on my waterpump problem right now, but I'll have a look at mine tomorrow and see if there's an alternative.

Re: Battery positive lead connections.
Tempted to ask why on the leads...
Have you had a fire?
If not just a clean up normally does the job....
I don't think I've even needed to change the positive side in to the fat loom joiner. The negative earth side I may have done or recrimped
and soldered the connectors that bolt to the body and engine block.
If your old battery still holds a charge I might be interested...

Go onto ebay as there are four people breaking dolomite - send them a message asking if the battery to starter motor cable is available to purchase, I'm sure they will answer you if its available.

No fire thankfully Jon. I have an upgraded battery of 45ah and 360 CCA and wanted to uprate the lead to a thicker version as suggested before or is the consensus the original will suffice ?

Your original has plenty of reserve capacity....
It never gets driven harder than when you are trying to start your car....

Re: Battery positive lead connections.
Not had time to look at this recently but back on it today. I have the new lead but considered using the old one but the terminal cover is wrecked and I thought I would use the new lead and terminal cover. I got the old 4 way connector off the old lead and tried to crimp it back on the new one in the vice. As soon as I bent it back again it broke.
I can't find the original type connector on the internet anywhere. I don't mind making things non standard but most cars don't seem to have this connector and I can't even find much that is similar and will do the job.
Any suggestions ? Someone must have done this before. What about when someone has moved the battery to the boot. What did you do with these connections ?

You could probably use something like this.
http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/p ... -5mm-studs
or
http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/p ... 4mm-screws
There is also a cover
http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.eu/p ... 105-busbar
Just use a standard battery cable to the starter, take a second thick lead from the battery to this box and connect the brown leads which normally go into the Triumph battery lead plug.
Simples....

Re: Battery positive lead connections.
Thanks Paul. I saw these and unless someone has a better idea you have confirmed my thoughts. If I went for the 5mm studs I thought I could use the new lead where I have cut the insulation back as per the original lead and use a clamp across two terminals rather than cut the new lead and have to get ends soldered on. I can then use crimped ends on the 4 small brown leads and hopefully Bob's your uncle, or father in law in my case...

Re: Battery positive lead connections.
Keep searching, I've seen these new somewhere, somewhen. One of the classic electrical suppliers you see at all the shows I think. I'll try to dig more out of the grey cells but make no promises.

Re: Battery positive lead connections.
Thanks Julian
I would like to avoid adding further bulky connectors so an original would be good. As a last resort I wondered if I could use the 4 intact connections and find a way of strapping/securing that to the cable, ideally within the original shroud .
