Do I need the above if I fit my k&ns? I thought they bolted straight on?

They do bolt straight on, but stub stacks help to improve intake velocity etc etc. If you look at carb filter backplates in general you will often see that they have a similar small trumpet built in.

MG but might be useful as still a HS4:

Current fleet: '75 Sprint, '73 1850, Daihatsu Fourtrak, Honda CG125, Yamaha Fazer 600, Shetland 570 (yes it's a boat!)

Past fleet: Triumph 2000, Lancia Beta Coupe, BL Mini Clubman, Austin Metro, Vauxhall Cavalier MK1 & MK2, Renault 18 D, Rover 216 GSI, Honda Accord (most expensive car purchase, hated, made out of magnetic metal as only car I've ever been crashed into...4 times), BMW 318, Golf GTi MK3 16v x 3

Thanks Galileo, that link is very informative and interesting.
It looks like the Rimmer offering isn't up to much, but then they are cheap compared to some of the state of the art trumpets on the MGs.

If you fancy a go, then MGOC have them for £9.95, £6 cheaper than RB. They're only 10 minutes away from me, and have proved useful for some generic parts but a Triumph spares dept would have been a bit better...

Do like turning up there in my car though, just so that I can hear all the MG owners ooo and ahhh as they pass by, or like last time someone explain in really glowing ways to their son about how good a Sprint is!

MGB's had them fitted as std I think may be available cheap if needed? I got some from Calver tuning, but I think they have stopped selling them now. Beautifully made...

That's why I posted a link to the MG Owners club spares department above!

Cor, those MED ones look nice, not sure about £50 a pair nice but I guess if you're chasing horsepower and after a couple extra it could be worthwhile.

I've got K&N's fitted to my Sprint but only because it came with them, as apart from longevity I've never been that impressed with a K&N filter as a straight swap without further fuelling work being done. I bet if I look at the needles in my carbs that they are the stock ones, which means that fitting a K&N has probably done nothing but degrade performance.

On my old ABF engined Golf I separated the K&N from the engine with a heatshield (essential, underbody air is too hot), fitted Newman fast road cams and then had a rolling road session to remap the fuelling afterwards. It was only after the remap that I felt confident that they did make a difference, but it was only 4hp different to the stock air box, not as great a figure as I was hoping for considering, but £100 for 4hp I guess wasn't to bad.

Not sure about this Bill....
I thought you were going with a K&N filter within the original air box?

Me, I wouldn't ditch the original air box if I had SU carbs.
If it isn't possible to fit an internal filter then I'd go with a single conical type connected (via a Y-piece) to the air box.

Those med ones are lovely!
Ian, just weighing up options for now and was curious about stub stacks since I'd never heard of them.
I have a couple of spare air filter boxes I can play with, but I think the width oh the k&ns will push the box too close the the battery.....

These from Rimmers look very good too for just £40 the pair:
HS2:

HS4:
http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-RL1396ALT
HS6:

If you speak nicely to them they may give you a discount as part of the Dolomite sale (no harm in asking anyway)

Check out the Accuspark shop on Ebay; I got a pair for my Sprint for about £12 including postage from them earlier this year. You should get a proper tune or you will probably run lean with this set up on standard needles, but check the needle codes first as they may already have been changed. If you are wanting to set the sub-stacks up right then they need careful alignment with the inlet manifold and the back plate of the air filter as there is a little room for movement, just take a little time to feel around the inside of the opening and then keep them still as you tighten up the threads. These air filters need to be cleaned and oiled periodically too and as long as you do this you should get a slight increase in power without harming your engine.
Some say they look good and like the increased induction noise too!
Andy.
