Thanks, Have tried this sequence and the car won't start so there must be another problem. It ran badly misfiring so I thought i'd inspect the leads and cap and swapped the leads over and having got it to run badly in the wrong order I thought i'd try in the correct order and it won't start so it must be something else.

I also checked the leads contunuity and they all seem to be OK. Why is it I find the need to fiddle with things?

Set the engine to top dead centre on its firing stroke (crank pulley at 0 degrees and cam lined up with its timing on the bearing cap) and check where the rotor arm is pointing to.
