Clutch slave cylinder

#1 Post by cleverusername »

Hi all, the clutch slave in my 1500 is beyond repair, so I need a replacement. I was wondering what my options are, are there parts from other cars that will fit for example? I am a bit warry of the ebay/google search route, as I know there are a few dubious sellers selling landrover master cylinders for Dollys, and those parts are incorrect. So I want to make sure I get the right slave.

Have you considered buying a club one? I get the impression that the club would not sell something substandard to it's own members!

from the parts list:

Clutch - Master Cylinder Std £32.99
Clutch - Master Cylinder Stainless Sleeved £NCA
Clutch - Master Cylinder Surcharge £15.00
Clutch - Slave Cylinder Brass Piston £15.99
Clutch - Seal Kit Slave Cyl 1300 & 1500 76 to 81 £4.49
Clutch - Slave Cylinder Stainless Sleeved & Brass Piston £45.99
Clutch - Slave Cylinder Stainless Sleeved & Std Piston £29.99
Current fleet: '75 Sprint, '73 1850, Daihatsu Fourtrak, Honda CG125, Yamaha Fazer 600, Shetland 570 (yes it's a boat!)

Past fleet: Triumph 2000, Lancia Beta Coupe, BL Mini Clubman, Austin Metro, Vauxhall Cavalier MK1 & MK2, Renault 18 D, Rover 216 GSI, Honda Accord (most expensive car purchase, hated, made out of magnetic metal as only car I've ever been crashed into...4 times), BMW 318, Golf GTi MK3 16v x 3

I have contacted the club, but you have to remember it is staffed by volunteers, so I don't think the parts department will be open durring the Christmas period. I am looking for possible alternatives.

We are open over the Christmas break, but unfortunately that list is several years out of date; we don't currently do anything with clutch cylinders as their equivalents are still available far cheaper than we can recondition originals.

I am happy to receive clutch core should this situation ever change.

Jon pm sent.

When I have replaced the slave cylinder would you like me to send it to the club? I don't know if it is repairable, but it is yours if you want it.

Yes, as I say, I'm happy to collect and accumulate core before the event of it being needed, that way, should opportunity or need arise we at least have a running start.

If you drop it off at the Club stand at any show it will eventually get to me if that is preferable to post.

Ah, slight hitch, I have discovered why the clutch was dodgy. I had to battle to remove the slave, the rubber seal that replaces the metal seal at the end had distorted and jammed everything. To get it out of the bracket I had to remove it, and various bit fell out. There was also dot fluid over the clutch release arm. I think the slave cylinder is about as dead as a slave cylinder can be.

Managed to get a new one, so hopefully when I bleed it, all will be well.

Sounds like you had a non OE one which had a rubber end instead of the steel cap with a small rubber disc on the push rod.
Getting the steel end cap off in one piece can also be a problem.
Sorry for not getting back sooner due to seasonal pressures.

I do have a reconned OE one if you are still stuck.

Because the voluntary post of 'spares officer' has been vacant for a while. The Club needs volunteers to function, but sadly many simply expect things to just happen...

I thought that Stephen Walton had taken on that position? If you're looking for someone to curate the parts list and find out what the situation is then I'll be happy to do that and put up a stock list with quantities on Google docs, for example.

He did, then went quiet, as far as I'm aware.

If you are able to assist, I'm sure the committee will welcome your offer. It is quite timely too, as we are considering setting up a trade account with one of two suppliers, both of whom have expressed interest...

Oh dear having verified the hydraulics are fine, I have been unable to free the clutch. The pedal hits a brick wall halfway down. I fear something has failed inside the bell housing, so next step will be to borrow a fibre optic camera and have a look inside. Thanks you all your assistance.
