Relay or no Relay?
I'm wiring up a Kenlowe leccy fan for XJX but on reading the instructions it says that you do not need to fit a relay if the current draw is no more than 15A at 12V DC. I know what I'm going to do but thought I'd put it up here for discussion.
Sprintless for the first time in 35+ years.
... Still Sprintless.

Re: Relay or no Relay?
Really needs a relay.
Why switch up to 15A dc with all the inherent arcing and sparking across switch contacts when a plug-in relay would do the job for you, allowing any number of switch types to be used with no worries about their current handling capabilities?

Re: Relay or no Relay?
Totally agree...
Anything over 10 A I would relay...

Re: Relay or no Relay?
Had a Kenlow on my sprint over 25 years without a relay but when it runs for any length of time eg traffic jam during the warmer weather the wires on the manual switch get quite warm and you watch the volt meter drop a fair bit . So a relay would be wise but I have been lazy.

Re: Relay or no Relay?
I have to admit, I have fitted many (probably in excess of 20) kenlowe fans and never once have I fitted a relay, nor have I had fire or any other kind of problem. On several of those occaisions I have used brand new ones which come as a complete kit. Since the kit does NOT include a relay, my conclusion is that one is not really necessary.
However, any excuse to fit a relay is a good one - and it can't do any harm!

Re: Relay or no Relay?
I would be interested to know which Kenlowe fan kit is now specified for the Triumph Toledo 13/1500 and Dolomite 13/1500 these days.
Way back in the early-1980s, Kenlowe supplied me with a kit which was said to be correct for my 1974 Triumph Toledo 1300. I questioned whether it was the correct one, but they insisted that it was, despite my need to fabricate circa 3/8 inch stand-off spacers for the top & bottom, radiator mounting brackets, in order to obtain clearance for the motor and fan blades.
