Has anyone ever separated the glass from the plastic backing on the "lesser" model headlights? Need to do it to mine

I've not tried, and I don't know anyone who has. You can be the first! And if it all goes pear shaped, I have a couple of good used ones.......
Bulbed type and one sealed beam type.

I've done it numerous times ,most recently on my early Renault based campervan to fit slightly smaller headlamps inside the originals ( new ones no longer available and the reflectors had gone).
The success rate of removal depends entirely on your skill level....good luck!

And how is that funny bulb going to work (it won't) with the fresnel lens pattern in your original headlight glass?

He he...Rich you crack me up....keep on being you....

As it'll no longer be necessary for the inside of the unit to be reflective, you could always cut out part of the back and weld in a tube to recess the projector enough for the lens to fit back on.

Apart from sealed beam types, I haven't come across plastic backings, only metal ones. I always learn with these cars!

It's still a fascinating and imaginative conversion though and good luck with it - although it is not road legal (even if it passes the MoT), as the lamp will need testing and marking with the appropriate ECE marks (just done a big piece for Auto Express on the issue, so a bit of a nerd on lighting at the mo!)

That's ok mate. Legality doesn't worry me too much as I won't do too much night time driving anyway. Just want the amazing lighting for when I do:) also I'll make sure to set them up correctly if/when I get them fitted:)
