1850 Starter Motors

#1 Post by xvivalve »

Been sorting through the core I have for reconditioning.

There are two types of 1850 starter motor; When viewing end on at the pinion end with the mounting holes at 12 and 6 o'clock, one has the solenoid almost perpendicular to a line drawn between the mount holes at approximately 3 o'clock, whereas on the other type it is closer to 1 or 5 o'clock.

My problem is that for the latter, I have an equal number with the pinion at 5 as I do with it at 1! I have no idea which is correct, nor any notion of what car the other example fits!

Does anyone have a photo' of what they categorically know to be an 1850 starter motor with the non perpendicular solenoid?

Hi Alun, If you have the ones I gave you for core separately, then I definitely remember that the one that came of SWK ( 1850 ) was a 3-bolt one. That was swapped for a hi-torque one. One or two of the others were off MPD a 1973 1850 on Strombergs, so very early ones. ( I had lots of trouble with the click-er-click-er-click-er syndrome on that one. ) The others would have been Sprint ones from DHO. I think one has a solenoid missing that I swapped around to get a good one.
Dave could probably help with piccys of an early 1850.

I was about to ask you what the three hole ones you gave me were off Tony as it is they that caused me to look at all of the others. The ones you gave me have two open unthreaded mounting holes, but the third hole is both threaded and blind, so are not like standard Sprint starters that have all three holes the same, ie open and unthreaded!?

Unfortunately, by then, the two holers you gave me were randomly added to the pile of two holers. The one with the solenoid missing is actually a perpendicular two holer...

This is what mine looks like.

I can't guarantee the age of it but looking at the parts catalogues, mine is the correct one for the 1850 which remained basically the same throughout production. I've noticed that the 1500 pre-engaged starter also has 2 bolt holes with the solenoid closer to one of the bolt holes. The Sprint starter motor has 3 bolt holes as does the TR7. The Stag starter motor has 2 bolt holes with the solenoid closer to one of them like the 1500 pre-engaged starter motor.

Hope this helps.

The 1850 starter changed the location of the solenoid as described in my opening post.

Hi Al, I remember that starter which came off SWK (with the ex-BL CVT). When I needed to change the starter I removed the top and bottom 2 through-bolts and expected it to just drop off. And it didn't ! It took me some time to realise that there was a 3rd bolt fitted from the rear. I'd never seen that fitment before. I wonder if it was a special for B.L. Do you still have the I.D data from the motor main casing please ?
Thanks,
Tony.

I've found three like that, I'll have a look at the casings in daylight, but they weren't too particular when reconditioning historically to match the cases to the innards when reassembling. No idea which of the three came from you, but it is worth knowing they still fit the cars.

I've now sorted my dilemma too. First I had the motor upside down, so the solenoids are at 7 and 11 not 1 and 5, and by offering them up to a block I now know the 11's don't fit.
