Matt black car?

#1 Post by IncaDolly78 »

Hi just wondering if anyone has sprayed their car Matt black, I think it would look rather cool, although it's an expensive step to reverse!

Vinyl wrapping seems to be the 'in thing' and it's completely reversible. Got to ask, what's wrong with Inca yellow?!

 Haha I'm not thinking about painting my car matt black, God no. I love Inca yellow. I've got an old bonnet I painted black just to try it but I just wondered if any one has ever painted a dolly black. Gloss black is rare isn't it, but it was an option on later cars? I used to know a couple in Norwich with a black Sprint - "beastie" I think they called it. Wonder what became of that car.

As far as I'm aware the only Dollies that ever left the factory in black were the 1500SE models. I can't recall seeing any others in the '70s or '80s - someone else may come along and tell me I'm wrong though :)

Its thought that about half a dozen others (mostly Sprints) were special factory orders in black.

Triumph always offered Black as a special order cost option, but it WAS a rather costly cost option, so not many took it up! Plus in the 70s (unlike today) you couldn't give black cars away, now its the MOST popular colour!

I have Ken Roberts old Toledo, which he dubbed "Project Satin Black"

The photos make it look better than it is, in reality, the black seems to be washing off in the rain, exposing Damson patches!

Couple of photos of Beastie the black Sprint b on the day I bought my car circa 2003. Beastie's interior was blue which was rare then. Also it has chrome trim along the panel lines continuing over the rear wings, I've never seen this on another car.

I'm sad to discover Beastie is no more, his owners - Felicity and Trevor I think - were the Norfolk area reps. Are they still members?
I checked on dvla site and Beastie hasn't been MOT'd since 2011. So it seems you're right whydidistartthis :(

Lancia should have had a Russet brown matt colour option, would have hidden all rust, but James said No.

Some dollies did adopt this optional colour for no cost during the years after production.

Seriously though, it's your car, paint it whatever colour you want.

Mine's matt white, with brown verticle coach lines (rust coloured streaks).
