wiring loom question (adding headlight / horn relays)

I am modifying a 1500 wiring loom to fit into a Toledo. This has involved more changes than anticipated so I am taking the opportunity to upgrade a few things. This will include adding some relays for the headlights (and possibly horns). My plan is to mount the relays on the passenger side behind the lights somewhere.

My question is - is there any reason why I shouldn't remove the wiring for the driver side headlights (and horn) from the wiring loom whilst its all 'unwrapped'? (I will be making a separate loom to run across the front of the car)

The best is to have it done. I know a company in Holland that does a good job on wiring and the owner is well known with dolomites.

One of my own and a fellow Dutch dolomite owner Tahiti sprint I made a seperate frontloom. It was connected to the original with a multi connector. All the relais inside the car and some extra fuses. Under the bonnet all looked original. The advantage was the electric fan and extra spotlight wiring was also in it. No extra fussy wires but one neat loom with all the extras in it.

I have recently fitted relays in my 1500hl. In addition to the relays I purchased a couple of three way connectors and a couple of headlight connectors. This enabled me to fit the relays without having to cut into any of the original wiring. I just unplugged the existing connections and connected the modification in. The relays are mounted on a bracket that I have fitted just above the battery. There are even tapped holes existing in the bulkhead to take bracket.

I will attempt to attach some photographs.

Here are the pics of the one for Ronald (Tahiti Sprint). Wiring looms were alway's a hobby of me and this one i did made about 5 years ago. Ronald did want one fuse box like original. The relays were from memory the lights, electric fan, horns and fuel pump. I made for him also the lamp looms and the spot lamp looms. The connectors to the original loom were of the original type. The piece to the coil/distributor is also different because he uses an electronic ignition conversion. Inside the interior were the relays and the connection to the original loom.

As it is hand made all is possible to fit in what you like. My 1300 i did made two original fuseboxes under the bonnet near each other. A could have been original look. The best is to pm or email what you would like to have exactly and where you want to put everything. I do have a RHD 1300 and RHD sprint to measure to have the right dimensions as the rhd looms are totally different as the lhd. To Ronalds loom i did fit the contra connectors also because i had his complete loom. You can choose to cut your own loom and i can supply an easy to fit diy connector. The original terminals are a bit fiddely to crimp on the wires without the right crimping pliers.

I Like the fused relays used by Richard Old.
I have a crimp tool that does a good job with original style crimp connectors.

It would also be possible to make a series of a DIY plug and play light & horn relais conversion sets. Maybe as optional fog/spot/fan in it? If there is enough animo for it. For the sprint and 1850 it would be a sort of replacement loom what goes next to the front valances that replaces the original front part. Cut the original loom under the battery and from then the new one including the relais to the lamps and horns. Then you don't have to take out the whole loom.

I would be interested in a plug and play conversion set for headlamp and spotlamp relays. Currently have original headlamps but might convert to halogen at some point in the future. I would like to be able to use original Lucas 6RA type relays, possibly mounted to the nearside (RHD car) bulkhead where there are some handy screw holes. Is that the sort of thing you might be able to make up?

That will be possible. I do like the original Lucas relay's the most. For the electric fan on my 1300 i use also (above the battery).

This six-position, relay mounting cum connector block (dimensions 110 mm x 75 mm x 25 mm), made by Rists (a division of Lucas Industries), is one of several, I salvaged from various Austin Montego & Rover Montego cars. They were also fitted to the earlier Austin Princess.



The picture shows the reverse side of the connector block, where one can see the sockets, into which inserts ¼-inch, latched, female blade connectors, which remain captive, enabling to plug-in and unplug accessory relays of various types.



I have used two such items, suspended unobtrusively, beneath the steering-column support bracket, of my British specification, 1973 VW Type 2, to make provision for, an additional twelve accessory relays. I'm hoping to use some in my 1974 Triumph Toledo 1300 "HL"



The similar item, of identical dimensions, with yellow and green inserts, was salvaged from a late-model Austin Metro car. This item accepts accessory relays, buzzers and flasher units, having upto five ¼ inch (i.e. 6·3 mm) and four 1/8 inch (i.e. 2·8 mm), male-blade connector terminals.
