Confused by axle shims

#1 Post by cleverusername »

I have to admit the sprint hub axle shims have me baffled. Every site and manual I have read assumes you know how they work and how to fit them.

Having initially started with no shims and getting zero float; with the intention of adding shims each side to correct float. I have now evenly split all the shims I got with the axle and fitted half each side. Now at least the axle turns freeky, but I still have zero float.

I am measurung the float with a dial gauge on the backplate and tugging on the the hub to try and move it. Being careful not to flex the backplate, which woukd give the illusion of float.

To increase float do I add or remove shims? Roughly how many are needed? At the price the brothers charge for a flimsy piece of metal, this could get very expensive very quick.

Cheers, I was afraid that would be the case, looks like the brothers are taking more of my money.
