Sprint engine mounts from Rimmers
Sprint engine mounts from Rimmers
I cannot get them in! first of all the mounting holes needed re-drilled but now I have been battling for a couple of hours. Does anyone have any tips! I have the engine on a support bar that I can raise or lower, The car itself is on a 2 post lift. I have secured the gearbox mount first as per Haynes, are the mounts just too big?

Hello, sorry to hear of your engine mount problems!
Many years ago I bought a pair of remanufactured mounts from the same company. I spent many days and tried every which way to get them to fit..I was defeated. The memory of the frustration still fills me with horror.
I ended up giving them away but with the warning that they would be best used as a paperweight or the occasional doorstop.
I rescued the old ones from the bin and put them back on with no problems at all for years afterwards.
A lot of the time it is just the gearbox mount that you need because that is the one that perishes first.
Sorry its not what you want to read!
Best of luck.

As with more rubber mounts, have nothing tightened . The nuts just a few turns on. that way everything can move to everyway. Big screwdrivers to guide the holes will also help.

Make sure the mounting brackets are on the correct side and the right way up. Deeper one goes on the exhaust side and cutouts always at the top.
You can undo these brackets from the engine and trial fit the mounts to them.
Ive seen some serious bodging on these with slotted holes drilled and all sorts. All they needed was to be the right way up!.

As the others have said, correct side and way up. I also have used copper grease between the mount and subframe bracket to help it slide in place. Use the weight of the engine and get the left side lined up and loosely bolted together. Then with a blunt chisel and hammer on the metal edge of the offside mount, tap it down until you can get the end of a screwdriver in one hole to help lever into place. Keep working away with progressively larger screwdrivers until you can get one bolt in, then do the same with the other hole until the second bolt goes in. Finally do all the bolts/nuts up tight. You actually want stiff mounts so the difficulty in locating them is a natural consequence. It does take time and effort to get them located properly. Nothing wrong with the mounts, I use items from said suppliers on all three cars, including the race car.
The gearbox mount is easy to change and as they are in the path of a lot of stray oil which softens them, they usually deteriorate and need changing before the two front ones. Often that is the only one of the three mounts that needs changing. Trick when fitting a new one is to wrap it in a thick plastic bag before fitting so oil and rubber can't get in contact. Then it will last almost indefinitely!
