Sprint Rocker cover breather.....

#1 Post by shaunroche »

To comply with MSA regulations for competition cars I've got a rocker breather oil catch tank.

I'm thinking if doing away with the bent copper outlet pipe as it leaking out of the joint and replacing it with a threaded bulkhead adapter type affair.

Do I need to retain the filter gauze in the rocker cover or can I do away with it?

The gauze acts as a flame trap/quencher so without it in theory ignited oil/air mix could travel to your oil catch can and 'boom'

Not sure how many engine bay fires can be attributed to this but most cars have a similar gizmo so there must be some science behind it?

It can also act as damper too. The oil flung at it in mist form may condense back to oil once its trapped in the mesh and simply fall back into the head. If removed you may get more oil in the catch tank. Id leave it in there if its clean enough.
