Help please....Setting Sprint timing chain tension via the adjustable guide correctly.
Hi,
Put a few posts up recently as I'm in the process of my Sprint engine rebuild.
I'm a motor tech by trade, however it's a long time since I've rebuilt one of these.
So, today I have fitted my timing chain, cam marks line up, dizzy rotor is pointing to the vacuum capsule as per Leyland book illustration, dizzy bolt holes sit a 'little' off centre in their slots and a straight edge across the jackshaft pulley shows it to sit between the two guide bolt holes.
I wasn't too sure on the accuracy of the tdc mark on the timing cover, so have used a dial gauge to establish tdc with No1 piston.
The tensioner is fitted with an approx. 2.5mm shim behind the pad. The way I read the instructions is to push on the curved guide until the tensioner spacer is clamped, then tighten guide bolts.
The Leyland manual shows an arrow pointing to push at the lower part of the guide, is this correct as if this is done the guide does not contact the chain at the top - viewed from the cylinder head. Are you meant to push the guide centrally? Does anyone know? curious to know how all you Sprint experts do this.
Also, who makes/sells the best chain guides at the moment?? Mine are new, and where bought from Rimmers in around 2004/5.
All answers will be greatly appreciated.
Chris.

Chris
I expect the tensioner you have is a ROLON from Rimmers. DO NOT USE IT.
Jaguar make one that is a straight fit but make sure it is original Jaguar. A search of the forum here will tell you how bad ROLON tensioners are .

Thanks for the info,
I ditched the Rolon tensioner when I found out about these issues, the one I have is a brand new genuine Leyland Renold one. Guides are repro though.
I'm unsure on setting the tension....depending what part of the guide you push on varies where the chain contacts the guide, if that makes sense.
Re: Help please....Setting Sprint timing chain tension via the adjustable guide correctly.
I do set them evenly so that the chain does not try to eat from an edge of the curved guide. No first or last contact of the chain at the beginning or the ending of the guide. The straight guide has to guide only. When the chain is tight at the long side it just touches the long guide.

Hi,
Thanks for the post, nice clear photos, however, the bit I find a little misleading is where the arrow shows to push on the guide. If pushing here it tensions but then I noticed a large run of the chain at the top doesn't contact the guide....are we meant to push on the guide centrally and have equal amounts of chain contacting the curved guide?

YOU CANNOT RELY ON THE JAG PART NUMBER ALONE: MANY SUPPLIERS WILL SEND YOU A ROLON PRODUCT AS IT IS A COMMON SUPERSESSION. YOU NEED TO SPECIFICALLY STIPULATE YOU WANT A REYNOLDS PRODUCT AND WILL NOT ACCEPT ROLON.
All being well, Club Spares will be stocking these soon

What Alun said.
Please buy one of these from Robsport for now, they are of the correct quality.

Re: Help please....Setting Sprint timing chain tension via the adjustable guide correctly.
When I rang SNG B to order one some months ago, along with some other parts for my Jag, I was told that they could not tell me the brand of the tensioner, nor could they guarantee it was or was not any specific brand. So it seems to be pot luck.
I'm pleased to hear Alun and the TDC are again looking to find a solution to this problem for us. I will wait patiently until that time.

The only thing I can find wrong with all that is said is the fact that you state you have a shim of 2.5 mm under the tensioner head. I believe this should be 1 mm unless I am wrong as Murray would say.
track action maniac.
