Turn the cam until the follower is at the highest point of its travel, full lift as it were. You should be able to get a finger into the cup on the upper face of the follower and draw it up and out. It can be a fiddle and some cleaning of the follower bores may be needed before they will come all the way up. Or if the sump is off you can get to them and give them a little push from underneath with a little ingenuity and suitable pushing stick...

Isn't there a core plug that covers the rear of the cam?

Yes there is but I 1. wasn't sure if it would help and 2. didn't know how easy it would be to find another..

If you remove the core plug then rotate the camshaft that will help it slide out. You'll have to slide a long screw driver in to lift the followers further to clear the cam bearings. The plug is easily available on eBay etc.
