STR91 camshaft

#1 Post by ham204 »

As the head of my Sprint will soon be off for a general overhaul, I'm toying with the idea of fitting an STR91 camshaft. I understand that this is a fast road cam rather than a race one.

If I decide to fit one in, are there other items that need to be fitted instead of the standard items?

Also is it true that the benefit of the STR91 cam can be seen over 2000rpm?

Any other thing/s I need to know??

1983 Land Rover Series 3

1995 Suzuki Samurai SJ413

1972 MGB GT (banished for being too tight to fit in it)

You will need a vernier pulley to set the valve timing or some clever redrilling of your old one if you cant find one...
highly likely.

Back in the day when I did mine they weren't hard to find. Now I'm not so sure...

Then you will need to get a whole bunch of shims to reset the valve clearances correctly.

I wouldn't do this without a new chain and tensioner and guides myself...makes sense to only time your cam once.

Then you will need to reneedle your SU carbs. Cant remember what's in mine but it still pulls at over 120 on the speedo..It was done 25 plus years ago now...

Costs about 4-6 mpg...

You only live once....and you should think about a brake upgrade too.

Hi,

Vernier cam pulleys are readily available from Kent cams, reproducing due to popular demand, I bought one last week, nice quality made part! But boy am I struggling to set the damn thing up, protractor/dial gauge, so fiddly, almost at my wits end with it!

Excellent news on the pulley availability.

When I did mine - a while ago... I set the crank at 106 ATDC and rocked the cam through the valve peak, centralised it and tightend the pulley. I think there is something on this too in one of Mad Marts resto threads?

I don't remember it being that tough an issue....
