Early cars had a metal mudshield behind the front wheel, to protect the A pillar. After about '75, these became plastic and 2 further ones were added, one behind the headlight and one protecting the flitch stiffener above the front wheel (each side)
TBH, these later additions are a bit of an afterthought and I regard them as a mixed blessing, all they really do is move the place where the rot takes hold!
A better course of action to futureproof the car would be to find a suitable full inner plastic arch protector from a more modern car that can be adapted to fit a Dolomite. I shall be looking into this and scouring scrapyards before my Sprint hits the road!

mines a 74 and i have the metal shield to protect the A pillar and a plastic one for the flitch area,noughting left of behind headlamp area
Funny you say about the plastic arch protector,today i tried an plastic arch from an Astra,the fit was good at the back, but it was a bit/lot short at the front didn't cover enough of the headlights,going to try one from a Saab tomorrow it looks at bit bigger

Had a look at the SAAB plastic inner arch,its almost made for the job 
as the outer section has a lip that tucks under the dolomite arch nicely,still got a bit of trimming to clear the strut

Please let it be a 9-3, I have one i'm breaking in the yard at the moment!
If anyone is interested, I have a pair of original type headlamp backing mudshields in good condition. They were originally secured to the back of the inner front panel with a pair of plastic clips, the sort where you push a pin through the middle to secure them.
