Toledo pricing thoughts...

#1 Post by grifterkid »

Hello to you all...

I know that this is a bit of a 'how long is a piece of string' question but I'd like some advice and/or guidance if you'd be so kind.

I have come to the decision that my Toledo should be sold to someone who has the time and knowledge to get it back to tip-top condition. Unfortunately I have neither of those things, nor do I have much cash so the Toledo has been safely tucked away for a while now whilst I have been weighing things up.

It is a late car (P-reg') in Carmine with a tan interior. I have sourced and fitted Sprint alloys (x5), a Sprint chin spoiler and a Sprint steering wheel which give the car a nice look about it.

There is, of course rusty parts and the main areas of focus are the rear wheel arches and some grot in the front floor area. The paintwork is dull and flat but does polish up nicely when buffed hard!

The interior is very nice I think. I have added some seats from an HL dolomite and they are in very good condition and they are very comfortable indeed...

It is an MOT failure unfortunately ( https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-status No. Plate MEL 596P). The main focus is suspension bushings and shock absorbers in the front section of the car along with the track rod ends and I have been told that this isn't too much of a pain to do although a tad fiddly here and there!!!

At the moment the engine does not run as the battery is flat but when running this car really sings and I have been all over the place with no major woes at all.

If I really put my mind to it I could probably get this car back on song but I am just so very busy and I am aware of the fact that the longer I leave it the worse things will get and that pains me as I have had this car for years and I love it dearly!

So, I wouldn't mind a bit of advice as to pricing the car.

I know it's objective and difficult without viewing the car but I would like a rough guide as I don't to put a stupidly high price on the car for what it is nor do I want to under-sell it!

Many thanks to you in advance.

Shame youre thinking of moving it on grifterkid (do you have a grifter?) Where are you based? members nearby may be able to assess the car a bit more to help with the sale (or repair) to get stuff done. Ive always thought it looked nice in your avatar, but as youve mentioned it needs work, which is to be expected. Very difficult to price ( for me) as a bit here and there can often be a lot here and there once the grinder is out lol. Hope you get better advice, which is probable here :)

From what you have said, I really think it would be worth replacing the bushes, shock absorbers and track rod ends and putting it through an MOT. That would increase the value of the car quite a bit, but also make it more attractive in that a potential purchaser could drive it home, rather than have to arrange transportation.
Without an MOT I think you could get something like £800 for it, but you could possibly double that with an MOT. Obviously that is a bit of a guess without seeing the car.

I agree wholeheartedly with Nick...and once it has an MoT, you'll keep it! ;-)

Get a new MOT test done on it to see what it fails on now, make sure you find a classic friendly garage that knows the cars, nothing worse than an mot fail for front wheel bearings when they're fine. That will give you the status of the car from a getting-it-road-legal point if view. Then see if you can spend the cash to get it motd. You will sell the car easier with an mot (or with e new fail sheet) and probably recoup your expenditure. If you don't keep it...

The first question I ask a seller who puts, no MOT, but easy to get it through only a few faults; if it is so easy, why haven't you done it?

Buyers will assume that there is a big issue without an MOT, they will also expect you to knock money off to cover the cost of getting it trailer. You will also limit your pool of buyers, people outside your immediate area won't be interested in viewing a car they have to have shipped a long way.

I think this the same issue I am having selling my 1850HL, I have replaced all the brakes and the clutch hydraulics, it runs but no mot due to tin worm, potentially a good car, thinking of finding someone to do the welding so I can mot it, someone else can paint it.

If only it was October now! If either of these cars are still available in October I will be in the market. I just have to get the garage empty and sort a few things out then I'm back in the game.
