Reduced performance and erratic rev. counter

I have been playing with my carbs and thought that I had set them up OK.
When I went out for a run I found that it started to hold back when accelerating reasonably hard.
Naturally I thought it was the carbs but the plugs looked a good colour and I seemed to have put everything back OK.
I did the normal thing and went checking contacts etc.
I am thinking that the problem may be with the coil or wiring it's working now but there is obviously something a bit loose.
Could a bad connection to the rev counter be the cause or is it most likely to be the coil? I have read here that rev counter faults can cause problems but that seems to be early ones
